Our lives can grind to a halt when we don't know how to relate to our past. Some say to themselves, "the past is nothing", which is only an attempt to suppress the real brokenness of our past time and again. Others miss out on genuine renewal and change by making the past more important than their present and future lives. Neither approach moves people toward healing or hope.
In this podcast, Dr Bill Hines will help us see a third way to view one's personal history. By exploring the role of the past as God intended it. He will help us see that we are no longer victims but can leave our pasts behind us to the glory of God.

Dr Joel Beeke is a leading scholar on Puritan theology. In this podcast, he will explain how the Puritans viewed spiritual depression as a common trial of faith rather than a medical ailment. The Puritans acted as "soul physicians", prescribing deep Scripture meditation, reliance on God's sovereignty, and active utilisation of the church as a means of grace to move believers from darkness to joy.

John Newton was an eighteenth-century Anglican minister who is best known as the writer of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’. Yet he was also the leading pastoral counsellor of his generation, maintaining a prolific letter-writing ministry of pastoral care to dozens of people from all walks of life who wrote seeking his advice. But why was Newton’s counsel so popular? Dr Palmer will seek to answer this question by exploring Newton’s unique theology of suffering, which formed an essential structure that informed and shaped his model of soul care. Influenced by this doctrine, Newton’s manner and methodology of pastoral care are explored, highlighting key principles of his strategy as he sought to care for others.
