In this episode of the Hello Lovely Podcast, we talk about response ability — your ability to respond.
When we hear the phrase “take responsibility,” it can feel heavy. It can sound like a burden, something we don’t want to look at. It can make us feel defensive or shut down.
That’s because one definition of responsibility is “a burden of obligation.” When we think of it that way, it feels negative. It feels like pressure, and it keeps us stuck.
But when you look at it differently — response ability — it becomes something empowering.
Your ability to respond.
That means you have options. You have a choice in how you respond to anything that happens. It’s not about repeating the same reactions. It’s about checking in and deciding on purpose what you want to do.
When you use your response ability, you can pause and ask:
What do I want to do here?
What do I want to say here?
Instead of reacting on defense, you respond with intention.
This applies to everything — conversations, decisions, mistakes, success, other people’s opinions. You are not stuck with one automatic response. You can choose.
Response ability also means understanding that mistakes happen. You can look at a situation and decide it was the best response you had in that moment, or that you want to adjust next time. Both are part of growth.
When you feel rushed, overwhelmed, or like you need to explain yourself, that’s a moment to pause. You don’t have to respond immediately. You can take a breath, think, and choose.
A simple way to use this tool:
Breathe
Pause
Think
Choose what you want to do or say
Explaining is optional.
The more you practice this, the more natural it becomes. You move from feeling trapped or powerless to feeling clear and in control.
You always have your response ability. It’s a tool you can use in any moment.
