Rest & Rise: Supporting Black Educators with Dallas Cherry and Jordan Daugherty

Listen Later

Today's episode is about the specific need for wellness support for Black educators. Here in Washington, DC, we are proud to say that 55% of our educators and 63% of our school leaders are Black. These educators bring a huge wealth of experience and dedication to our school system, and provide essential support and mentorship to DC's Black students.

And yet, despite DC's rich history and legacy of Black educators, many Black teachers still don't receive the wellness support they need. With incredible demands on their time, the current intensity of student learning recovery, and the "racial battle fatigue" that comes from operating while Black within a system conditioned on white supremacy, many Black educators are burning out from accumulated stress.

Because of this, we are so excited to have this conversation about the importance of wellness, community, support and JOY for Black educators in Washington, DC and beyond. I'm joined by Jordan Daugherty, a dance educator and family engagement liaison at Center City Petworth Public Charter School, and Dallas Cherry a chemistry teacher at Maya Angelou High School. Both Dallas and Jordan are great teachers, involved community members, and all around fabulous people, and are currently serving as EmpowerEd fellows where they are working to make systemic change in our District schools.

Our discussion ranges from the power of Black representation in the classroom to learning about and valuing DC’s unique Black culture. We also talk about how to avoid the burnout and empathy fatigue that comes from supporting Black students through the highs and lows of life in our current society, and the futures we want to build with them.

We also announce the launch of EmpowerEd's new group for Black educators, Rest + Rise, a space dedicated to community-building and joy for Black Educators. If you are in the DC area, please save the date for our kickoff Happy Hour on October 11th and keep an eye out for the rest of the Rest + Rise events series all year long.
