Today's podcast is a heavier one for us. The recent election results were challenging for a lot of people, and, as education advocates in Washington, DC, we are definitely having a lot of feelings. There is just no way to sugarcoat the many potential threats this new administration brings to our education system, and our personal safety, in our nation's capital.
To make sense of what happened and what is ahead, we to have an open conversation about our initial reactions to the election, and how we'd are planning to navigate the new reality of work and lives. This episode is more unscripted than our normal ones, and we share more about our thoughts and feelings than normal.
In particular, we discuss:
- Why it's important to "microdose" hope and understand how the feelings of hope and despair work in our brain (thank you, Brene Brown!).
- The particular changes we are facing in DC, and how we are coming together as a DC advocacy community.
- Issues facing particularly vulnerable students, such as using student data and how it could be used in policing.
- and much more!
As you can hear, we don't have easy answers for the situation we are in and perfect optimism for our near future. What we do have, however, are the wellness tools we've been honing over the years, such as proactive self-care, community support, and the power of our collective resistance.
