What does it really mean to follow Jesus when life feels out of control? In John 21:15-19, Jesus reinstates Peter after his three denials and then speaks a haunting word about the future: when you are older, you will stretch out your hands and be led where you do not want to go. Far from being just a prediction about Peter's death, this passage opens up a profound truth about the spiritual life itself. There is an active dimension to our faith, the disciplines, the practices, the intentional pursuit of God, and there is a passive dimension, the seasons, the suffering, the circumstances we did not choose and cannot control. Both are forming us. The challenge is to stop seeing the difficult seasons of life as obstacles to our spiritual growth and start recognizing them as the very terrain where God is doing some of his deepest work in us. Whether we are in a season of busyness, loss, waiting, or uncertainty, the question is not why is this happening, but what is God forming in me through this?
