With these closing words in Matthew 7, Jesus is wrapping up the famous sermon on the mount where he thoroughly articulated the game-plan for life in the kingdom. But at its conclusion we must ask ourselves, how will we respond? Tragically, it’s possible to hear Jesus, and be astonished by His teaching, without ever being moved to obey Him. Here we are reminded that we mustn’t fool ourselves; someone who builds their house on the rock is not someone who hears Jesus more accurately, it’s someone who does what Jesus says.
Having said that, we cannot save ourselves by perfectly obeying the Law of Christ, that’s impossible. But if we put our trust in Jesus, the one who perfectly obeyed the law, and who died on the cross to pay the penalty for the many ways we’ve failed to live up to it, we will be saved. Jesus isn’t saying that if we do what He says we’ll be saved, but he’s saying that if we are truly saved, we’ll do what He says.
