The Autism in Black Podcast is hosted by Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC, and focuses on all things autism and the black parent experience. Our goal is to educate, support, and empower black parents to advocate not only for their children but for themselves as well.
Today we have Cheryl Poe, who is the founder and owner of advocating for kids Inc. Ms. Poe has work experience that includes over 14 years of working with children with various disabilities in their families. As an in-home therapeutic foster case manager, Ms. Poe a mother of two boys with learning disabilities and prides herself on understanding the struggles that parents face when dealing with special education issues. Ms. Poe is diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities herself and receive special education services as a child.
In this episode, she will be talking about the very serious topic of restraints and seclusion that children have endured in the school system. She gives different recommendations and tips on what a parent should do when his/her child is being restrained and secluded in the school. Moreover, she will be informing us all about this dire situation that is happening right now in some schools that were found restraining and secluding Black kids more than other kids with or without disabilities.
