The problem is that the main index remains below the expansion line. Services are weak, construction is contracting, employment is soft, and the property crisis continues to weigh on household confidence. China's advanced factories can produce more artificial intelligence hardware, vehicles, and electronics, but they cannot automatically convince Chinese families to spend, buy homes, or launch businesses.

Beijing still favors targeted credit and infrastructure investment over a giant consumer stimulus package. That protects strategic industries and gives the government control over where money flows. It also risks producing even more goods for foreign markets while domestic demand remains too weak to absorb them.

That is why the G20 trade fight matters. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wants other major economies to consider additional barriers against Chinese products. His case is that China's roughly $1.2 trillion trade surplus has become a global imbalance, not simply an American complaint.

Chinese goods pushed out of the US market are increasingly flowing toward Europe and Southeast Asia. A coordinated response involving tariffs, subsidy rules, carbon standards, transshipment enforcement, and forced-labor restrictions would be much harder for Beijing to evade than another bilateral tariff fight.

Russia remains one of the world's largest oil producers, but it increasingly needs help turning that crude into usable fuel.

That does not mean Russia is about to run out of gasoline. It does mean the system is getting more expensive and complicated. Turkey is already replacing Russian diesel with supplies from the United States and India. Once customers build new supply chains, Russia may struggle to win all of that business back.

The security picture is expanding too. Germany says eight NATO countries bordering the Baltic Sea plan to create a joint drone-defense task force. The goal is to share information and respond faster when drones appear near airports, pipelines, communication cables, military installations, or energy infrastructure. The hard part is determining whether an aircraft is commercial, criminal, accidental, or part of a Russian intelligence operation before it reaches something important.

Inside Russia, a serviceman was killed and his wife wounded when their car exploded outside St. Petersburg. Local reports identify the victim as an air-force lieutenant colonel, but officials have not confirmed his rank, named a suspect, or publicly attributed the attack. That uncertainty matters. Russia has suffered a string of assassinations and attempted attacks, but a familiar pattern is not the same thing as proof.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine are trading massive drone attacks across an increasingly wide battlefield. Russia struck Ukrainian homes, warehouses, rail operations, retail sites, and logistics centers. Russian authorities also claimed more than five hundred Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

This episode connects the battlefield to the bigger story: economic endurance, domestic security, refinery damage, hybrid warfare, NATO drone defense, and the growing cost of protecting a country as large as Russia while fighting a prolonged war.

China's economy looks stable from thirty thousand feet. Down on the ground, Beijing is still trying to convince families that buying a home is not a financial trap.

China kept its A-plus sovereign credit rating with a stable outlook, and economic growth is expected to remain above 4 percent over the next two years. China still has powerful manufacturing industries, resilient supply chains, enormous financial resources, and a government capable of directing money toward strategic priorities.

The weakness is domestic confidence. Chinese factories are better at producing goods than the economy is at persuading households to spend money. Property losses, unfinished apartments, local-government debt, and uncertain employment continue to weigh on consumers.

Beijing's latest housing reform goes directly at that problem. China plans to promote the sale of completed homes and require presale developments to have their main structures topped out before apartments are marketed. That sounds technical, but it addresses one of the most damaging features of China's property crisis. Families have been left paying mortgages on homes that developers never finished.

Completed-home sales could protect buyers and restore trust. They could also expose weak developers by forcing them to finance more construction before collecting customer money. The outcome will depend on escrow enforcement, local-government behavior, and what happens to the enormous backlog of unfinished projects.

Across the Taiwan Strait, the story is about drones, geography, and survival. Taiwan is preparing the Penghu Islands as an early defense hub against a possible Chinese first strike. The islands host radar systems, missiles, airfields, and a growing drone force. Their location can give Taiwan earlier warning and create opportunities to target Chinese ships. It also makes Penghu an obvious opening target.

Taiwan is backing that strategy with a six-year drone program worth more than $7 billion. Taipei wants domestic factories using non-Chinese components and hopes to build an export industry capable of keeping production lines active during peacetime. The challenge is not simply building thousands of airframes. Taiwan needs secure radios, sensors, software, electronic-warfare resistance, trained operators, and repair systems that can function under attack.

The cyber contest is heating up too. US authorities seized online infrastructure they say a China-based hacking group used to compromise connected devices and conceal attacks on government agencies and critical infrastructure. Beijing rejected the allegations and countered with its own claims of American cyberattacks. Routers, cameras, and other forgotten devices are becoming part of the strategic battlefield.

China is also managing two major disasters. Catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border killed hundreds and left more than a thousand people missing. Typhoon Saudel then struck Zhejiang after authorities evacuated more than 820,000 people and suspended major transportation services.

This episode connects China's economy, Taiwan's defense, drone manufacturing, cyber operations, disaster response, and Beijing's larger struggle to turn impressive government capacity into something harder to manufacture: public trust.

Iran says it is preparing terms to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The problem is that Washington and Tehran cannot even agree on whether the strait is currently open.

In today's Iran and the Middle East edition of the Restricted Handling Daily Intel Brief, Ryan and Glenn break down the latest Hormuz negotiations, Iran's hidden supreme leader, Washington's economic warfare strategy, Pakistan's sanctions resistance, massive Gulf infrastructure investments, Dubai's aviation losses, and Syria's surprising return to international payment networks.

Qatar's prime minister pressed Tehran to restore freedom of navigation, and Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei says Iran will produce a list of conditions. Tehran continues to link a full reopening to sanctions relief, access to frozen assets, an end to the US naval blockade, and military restraint.

The United States says the international shipping lanes are clear of Iranian mines and that approximately 1,500 commercial vessels have crossed safely. Washington also says it is no longer negotiating directly with Iran. Qatar and Oman are now carrying messages between two governments that disagree over the basic facts, the rules, and who needs to make the first concession.

Commercial traffic shows why this matters. Only seven commodity vessels were recorded passing through the strait on Thursday, below the recent average and far below normal commercial activity. Shipowners need more than optimistic statements. They need predictable routes, recognized insurance, clear fees, reliable mine clearance, and confidence that entering the waterway will not lead to an armed confrontation or sanctions investigation.

Gulf governments are already preparing for the possibility that Hormuz never returns to its former role. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are investing in ports, pipelines, storage facilities, and alternative routes toward the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. Investors are also examining possible connections through Syria, Jordan, and Turkey. Even if Hormuz fully reopens, the war may permanently redirect billions of dollars in infrastructure spending.

Washington is betting that economic pressure can move faster. President Donald Trump says the United States is focused on Operation Economic Outcast instead of direct talks. Banks, companies, ports, and governments doing business with Iran could face secondary sanctions or lose access to the dollar-based financial system.

Pakistan has already rejected that pressure. Islamabad says it will continue lawful trade with Iran and does not consider itself bound by unilateral sanctions without United Nations authority. China has made a similar argument. That creates a serious enforcement test for Washington. Secondary sanctions only work if governments and businesses believe the United States is prepared to punish important partners.

Then there is Iran's leadership mystery. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remains publicly unseen six months after he was reportedly wounded in the opening attacks that killed his father. Iranian officials insist he is still making final decisions, but no recent photograph, video, or audio has confirmed that account. Every diplomatic message now carries an uncomfortable question: who is actually making the decision?

The regional economy is moving in opposite directions. Dubai's airport suffered a sharp decline in passenger traffic because of the war. Syria, meanwhile, completed its first international Visa and Mastercard transactions after Washington removed the country from the state-sponsor list.
