The driver shortage is not going away, and if your only lever is “post another ad” or “raise wages,” you are going to keep losing the same fight. We walk through why smaller transit systems, school bus contractors, airports, and motor coach operators get squeezed when big metro agencies raise pay, then still struggle to keep seats filled behind the wheel.
I’m Patrick Parents, a bus operator turned recruiter and business owner, and I’m sharing four practical recruitment strategies I’ve used in real life. First, we build a pipeline of influence by introducing students to bus transportation early with hands-on demos like Transit University, because people do not choose careers they cannot picture. Next, we activate the dormant CDL workforce with a gig-style driver container: prequalified drivers, clear assignments, and fast pay so experienced operators can say yes without committing to a rigid pick. Then we face the uncomfortable but necessary move of developing our own drivers, using training schedules that work for working adults and turning the trainer into a recruiting and retention engine. Finally, we market the lifestyle, not just the job, from motor coach travel to airport shuttle “plane spotting” energy, because not every driver is motivated by the same thing.
If you want better transit recruitment, a stronger driver pipeline, and a realistic plan to staff your operation, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a hiring manager, and leave a review with your biggest driver hiring challenge.
