We can soften and heal our Inner Critic with understanding and compassion. Our Inner Critic had an adaptive purpose; however, causes pain and discomfort in adult life. Dr. Neff describes self-compassion as “quieting of one's inner critic and replacing it with a voice of support, understanding, and care for one's self.” So we treat ourselves with the same compassion and kindness we show others who are suffering.
