Just under four years ago, Michael Howland received a devastating diagnosis that would alter his life and the lives of his family members forever. Micheal Howland became President and CEO of Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center in September 2014, bringing a wealth of leadership experience to his new role. He previously led the U.S. Small Business Administration in San Francisco, Independent Charities of America, Christian Service Charities and three related associations of national charities, The Arc of Greater Indianapolis (Noble of Indiana), and Philanthropy Southeast. He also served as Vice President for University Advancement and Chief Strategic Relations Officer at his Jacksonville University alma mater. His long history with JU includes serving as President of the student body and the JU Alumni Association, and as Chair of the Trustee Nominating & Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Howland has led the expansion of JSHC programs and services, the strengthening of staff and Board and the relocation of the organization from one office to two professional and accessible clinical sites (1010 N. Davis Street and 14595 Philips Highway) and an administrative office in the Jessie Ball duPont Center. JSHC has forged new partnerships with foundations, corporations and governmental entities that have enabled the organization a broader community reach, especially as it relates to helping preschool children. Michael has chaired a plethora of national and local non-profit boards and campaigns. He is Immediate Past President of Leadership Jacksonville and Governance Chair of the 5 Buckets Foundation. We all have been given a finite amount of time on this earth. How can you take the time to enrich the community and expand your purpose? That's one of the questions I will answer in this conversation with Joel Chamberlain, a loving husband and father and successful accountant-turned-entrepreneur.  

From a young age, Joel’s grandfather instilled a foundation of faith. Have you ever experienced a radical shift in the direction you were going in life? Have you ever encountered a moment so impactful that your entire perspective changed in an instant? Meet Bishop Mark McGuire, the Director of Discipleship, Outreach, and Evangelism at the Potter’s House and active gang prevention agent. As a self-proclaimed hope-pusher, Mark is a community exhorter through and through. But he wasn't always a pillar of good in the community. In fact, Mark spent the majority of his teenage years and early adulthood immersed in a life of addiction, dealing drugs, and involvement in criminal activities. In this episode, he tells the captivating story of his life as a drug addict and dealer and how God dramatically got his attention. After almost 15 years of being in a life of fear and shame, Mark was arrested, convicted, and sent to prison. As he lay on the ground the night of the arrest, he wept, knowing that this would be the turning point of his life. While serving his sentence, Mark’s perspective radically changed toward a new role of helping others from the life that had trapped him for so long. Now, as a gang prevention advocate, Mark is helping those most in danger of gang-related violence in the Jacksonville area. Dr. Mark C. McGuire, Sr. is a native of Dayton, Ohio, and the Founder, Board of Directors President, and the Bishop of The Potter's House-Dayton International Ministries. He is currently a Staff Director of Discipleship, Outreach, and Evangelism of The Potter's House International Ministries, of Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. McGuire is the former Executive Director for Cure Violence Jacksonville/Westside MVP Team, through the TPHCDEC. He serves as the Coordinator, for the collaboration of Bethune-Cookman University Center for Law and Social Justice and the Jacksonville Sheriff Office, for the Community Safety & Engagement Action Plan. He is the Founder, Executive Director and CEO of The CARES Justice Institute, Inc. Dr. McGuire has several certifications, including COPE, SRM, and as a National Gang Specialists. He sits on many Boards and Task Forces nationally and has 20 years experience as a CARF Corporate Compliance Officer. He is a devoted husband to Lady Angela D. McGuire, MBA, Ph.D candidate; the loving father of 2 sons Mark Cameron Jr. and MC Sterling, and 2 Bonus Sons, Arthur and Jacoby, and 1 Bonus Daughter, Mericia; and he is a proud grandfather of 5. Can you believe that’s already a wrap for the first season of Retreading Lives? It’s been a journey of tears, hard conversations, and seemingly impossible situations. However, the transformative power of the Rethreaded Process has shone through, filling these moments with hope and optimism. We’ve discussed challenging topics and witnessed how this process can turn tragedy into potential. At 13, Cal was an avid entrepreneur who sustained himself with a litany of odd jobs for his neighbors, friends, and family.
