Jack complains about the classiness of his dressing room when Phil enters to learn of Jack’s latest wardrobe malfuncion. Just when Lum and Abner have thought they exhausted their means at finding out the babies identity, or what the coat of arms with him means, a new hope may arrive. Abner wonders why Lum is acting so strange and refuses to sit down. After some coaxing, Lum talks about the broken down horse he bought. He feels he needs to practice his horsemanship skills, so he’ll fit in with the rest of the dukes, and knights, when their royal baby is reunited with his kingdom.
Squire Skimp arrives, but will he have some information, or just want to sell a king sized insurance policy to the gents for the baby?

Lum feels offended that Squire took liberties to send off to a genealogy company to investigate the insignia of the coat of arms.
Both Lum and Abner think Squire has suspicions that the baby is a king, and only wants to horn in. A postcard comes that proves to add even more to the mystery of the baby.

  • Democracy in America – The 4th of July in Albany 1831. ep3 620131
Two aristocratic Frenchmen, D’Toukfel and Beaumont, travel America in 1831, to observe democracy, and culture. The flags, church bells, and sound of gun shots are marveled at, as the Frenchmen observe the celebration of the Revolutionary war… actually, the war of Independence. For the Frenchmen, revolutionary wars are grounds for both celebration and remorse.
Symbols in the parade are explained. From the wagons, to flags of various nations on display. Other observations that set American democracy apart from French democracy are made. Honor is upheld for George Washington, and that there have been no counter revolts, and orderly progression of government has occurred are noteworthy. Listen to an old veteran of the war tell about the war from his practical viewpoint of it. The honors of the day are for all who served, from soldier to general.
Speeches remind the Frenchmen of their less than honorable outcome of their revolution in the past July. In America, everything begins with a prayer. The Declaration of Independence is read, and with an electric feel from the listeners that was no theatrical production.

The speeches could have stopped there for our French visitors. To them the rest was the kind of nauseous pomp they might have found in their homeland.

  • Vic and Sade – Front Porch Swing, Russel. 430608.
Sade wants Vic to put up the porch swing. Vic, however, seems to be reluctant to do it. Eventually Sade takes on the job herself.
This episode is special because it represents the debut of Russell Miller into the Gook family.
We find out by doing some research that Russell is the orphaned nephew of Vic’s boss, Mr. Buller, at Consolidated Kitchenware. How and why he’s there at the Gook house seems beyond research as there is simply no way of knowing what exactly he is doing there in terms of the plot line. At any rate, Russell is now a part of the Gook household, at least for the better part of a year.
The part of Russell was played by David Whitehouse and there’s not much information available about him to be found anywhere… We do know the real reason he’s been added to the family; he’s an extra body, a son-figure.
Russell is certainly no clone of Rush but he does a pretty good job.
    Trivia:

    * Mr. Bainbridge from Dixon, McClellan and Pete McStingel are mentioned but nothing else was said about them. I’m going to assume that McClellan is the train conductor that Uncle Fletcher gave a cupcake to in this episode.
    * Uncle Fletcher tells the story of Ernie Spotters from Belvidere. He could play the violin, guitar and mouth organ. The gang tried to play a trick on him by giving him an anvil to play but he just sat there. He wore a pair of shoes for six weeks then tried to take them back to the store. He loved apples but hated fish. He was right-handed and left-handed both. He never trusted smoking tobacco; was afraid it would explode.
    * Uncle Fletcher tells of Minnesota Hoosh who would smoke but he wouldn’t chew tobacco.
    * Uncle Fletcher says that Harry Wool knew a man that knew Fred Stembottom.

  • Lum and Abner – The Phone Call. 420806
Letters from strangers, expected phone calls about the baby, and plenty of jumping to conclusions have the gents believing the baby in their care is royalty. Will their expected caller be the queen? Today Lum and Abner worry over whether they’re doing the right thing. Will rich rewards await them for their care of the baby? Maybe even propose marriage to Lum?
Imaginations run rampant, thinking of their brush with celebrity, and the fame it will bring them. Is there some kind of protocol that Lum ought to follow in talking to a queen? He and Abner try their hand at role playing a pretend call.
The phone rings, nerves run high. Will secrets be revealed? What does that coat of arms mean? The man on the other end talks in hushed tones, and warns of danger. The woman who dropped off the baby is his aunt, not his mom. A gunshot is heard! The phone call is dropped before more secrets can be revealed.
