Scripture: Revelation 14:14-16:16, John's vision in chapters 15 and 16 begins with a scene of joyous celebration but then continues with a description of the angels bearing the seven last plagues of God's wrath. As the bowls of God's wrath are poured out, all those worshiping false gods and refusing to repent of their sins are afflicted with terrible plagues. Tragically, there are even some within the Church who stubbornly refuse to repent, putting their salvation in peril. Through Baptism, however, the Lord clothes His people with the perfect righteousness of His Son. The Holy Spirit leads God's children away from the plagues of judgment and keeps them on the winning side in the final battle. As the created order itself begins to come unhinged, Christians need to continually remember that the only basis for our confidence on that dreaded day is that our Lord Jesus paid the full price of our punishment while dying on the cross.
