Cancer is a disease of isolation.  Your life orbits around the “C” word, but no one else’s does.  It’s your primary concern, but others understandably have their own primary concerns.  Your life is no longer normal:  doctor’s visits, medical scans, online searches for cures, and medical bills are the new priorities.  But nothing has changed for those around you.

My emotional core was groaning.  I scanned the room.  Visceral compassion rose up in me; an urging.  I wanted to see people in that room made well.  This wasn’t an intellectual exercise in prayer; it was spiritual pathos in bodily form.  No dutiful appeals: This was gut-level prayer. Some of you will struggle with this idea because you’ve been told for years that “Thy will be done” no longer means, “my own will be done.”  You’ve been told to sacrifice your will to a God who actually wants to resurrect it.

When praying for the sick, the last thing we want to do is scold anyone for a lack of faith.  This won’t give them any more faith and will only increase their suffering. How much faith should they have anyway; and who would know how much is enough faith?
