Jude wrote this book to warn believers about the apostasy that was creeping into the early church. Ungodly men were leading people astray. Paul warned Timothy that in the last days there would be those who would depart from the faith. This is an apt description of apostasy. They profess to be Christians but are really not even born again; they turn from doctrine and truth and leave the faith.  Jesus also warned about “false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” Now Jude exhorts us to “earnestly contend for the faith, once and for all, delivered to the saints.” Today, Pastor John helps us to recognize these false teachers. If we are to heed to Jude’s call to “defend the faith,” we need to know just what that faith is. Only by learning the essentials will we be able to defend our faith effectively and guard against false teaching. Today Pastor John helps us to understand the essential beliefs for all Christians. The theme of this little epistle is found in verse 3, “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” At this time, false teachers had crept into the church and Jude wrote this letter to not only warn believers, but to encourage them to grow spiritually and to contend for the faith. The way to be strong in the Lord, and the power of his might is through prayer. Ephesians 6:18 tells us, "Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere." We need to rely on the Lord's strength and wisdom; we must realize we are inadequate and limited in our resources. We need His help. It is through prayer that we communicate and develop this relationship with our heavenly father. Scripture tells us, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." Throughout this series, we've learned that it is essential to know our enemy and to prepare ourselves for battle properly. Ephesians 6:10 says, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power." So, how do we accomplish this? The Sword of the Spirit symbolizes the word of God, which is a sharp offensive weapon against the enemy. Paul offers us a great explanation of how to experience victory in spiritual warfare by putting on the armor of God. He uses the real example of armor worn by a Roman soldier to illustrate the spiritual armor that is to be worn by believers. In verse 13 of Ephesians 6, we read, "Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."
