Anticipation: Joy
Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui
Scripture: Luke 2:8-14
———
Is there a difference between happiness and joy?
The pursuit of happiness is futile.
The pursuit of detachment is frustrating.
———
How do we pursue joy? (How do we get our joy back?)
———
To pursue joy…
• Find Your Delight: Make a determined effort to spend time in God’s presence
If you want to find your increase your delight, look at Jesus and look to Jesus.
a. Look at Jesus and model your life after his.Joy is rooted in being in communion with God.
b. Look to Jesus and surrender your life to himOur joy is stolen when we forget what Jesus’ birth means.
• Strengthen Your Conviction: Look out for God’s providential acts in your life
Providence: “God’s ability to bring about his good purposes for us and the world, in spite of the human folly and evil”
Whatever God allows into our lives, it’s for one of two purposes:
i. To bring us in relationship with himself
ii. If we already know him, to make us more like his Son

Anticipation: Peace
Rev. Kelly Tam
Scripture: Luke 1:76-79
Peace, in the Biblical sense means to take what is broken and restore it to what it was meant to be.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.—Isaiah 9:6
———
Jesus gives us security
And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.—Isaiah 32:17
———
Jesus gives us clarity
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.—Philippians 4:6-7
———
With Jesus there is no end to peace
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”—John 16:33
———
As the Prince of Peach enters our life, we become People of Peace
And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”—Luke 1:76-69
———
How do we make sense of this brokenness?
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.—Colossians 3:12-15

The Power of Forgiveness
Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui

What is God’s providence?
The often-imperceptible work of God to fulfill his good purposes.
God’s Providence in Scripture (Phil. 2:13; Eph. 1:11-12; Romans 8:28)
———
What does trusting in God’s providence practically entail? (Gen. 50:19-20)
1. Leaving the righting of wrongs to God: God’s providential work IN us (v. 19)
2. Seeing God work for our ultimate good - God’s providential work FOR us (v. 20)
3. Forgiving those who hurt you and showing gratitude (and even) affection - God’s providential work THROUGH us (v. 21)

Consequences of Favouritism
———
1. Envy: Joseph’s brothers were filled with envy (v. 20)
Two ways to handle envy
a) Build yourself up
b) Bring others down
We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. —C.S. Lewis
———
2. Pride: Joseph puffed up with pride (v.9)
———
1. How do avoid favouritism?
A Word to Parents Are you shaping your children to believe that your love for them is predicated on their performance and behaviour?
Is it consistently communicated to them that their parent’s love rises and falls on how they perform or behave? How you interact with others (including how your parent) exposes who you think God is.
On a practical note…
• Acknowledge that you have unique relationship with each child
• Be proactive in showing love to each child
• Craft out intentional family time
———
2. How to I overcome envy and pride? A Word to Children
Allow your heavenly Father to meet your deepest needs
Learn to honour your parents — not idolize them.

Conclusion: Lean into the Father’s love…
