For the past two years, the music industry has fought a difficult battle against artificial intelligence. Artists, songwriters, and record labels have raised concerns about how AI companies train their models using copyrighted music without permission or compensation.
The biggest challenge has been transparency. Creators often have no way of knowing whether their music helped train an AI system that can now generate competing songs. While lawsuits and copyright claims dominated headlines throughout 2024 and 2025, many industry leaders knew that legal action alone could not solve the problem.
That may be changing.
Warner Music Group’s acquisition of AI attribution company Sureel represents one of the most significant developments in the relationship between AI and music. The deal signals a shift from fighting AI to managing it through technology, verification, and monetization.
