  • Mike Bloomgren Show (9/12/22)

    Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren breaks down the Owls all-around win over McNeese with Voice of the Owls J.P. Heath. Five forced turnovers by the defense were impressive along with the pick-six by Gabriel Taylor and the defensive line play of Blake Boenish and Ikenna Enechukwu. TJ McMahon was “California cool,” throwing for four touchdowns in his first career start and Bradley Rozner caught two touchdowns, his first time in the endzone in three years.

    McMahon takes the mic to discuss his unique path to Rice and the offseason quarterback battle with Wiley Green preparing him for his current starting role. Rozner then takes his turn, elaborating on his junior college roots and the fortitude developed after having to sit out most of the last two seasons.

    OC Marques Tuiasosopo documents his journey from being a star college quarterback and longtime NFL player. He reveals his motivation to get into coaching and what he enjoys on south Main.

    Coach Bloomgren then wraps up the show with a quick preview of Louisina’s Ragin Cajuns, who own the nation’s longest winning streak at 15 games.

    Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren of the Rice Owls joins J.P. Heath from Acme Oyster House to recap the USC loss, the improvements he needs to see, and the positives he saw from special teams in the setback.

    Kicker Tim Horn and punter Connor Hunt both hail from Hawaii and give fans an idea what it was like growing up in the Aloha State. They discuss their unique paths to Rice and getting used to Houston.

    Special Teams Coordinator Chris Monfiletto also has a unique path to Rice. He breaks down his unit as a whole and what he wants to see improved.

    Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren discusses the busy off-season for the Owls and the quarterback battle between Wiley Green and T.J. McMahon.

    6th-year senior Trey Schuman talks about his academic path at Rice and his aspirations to be in commercial real estate. He also has strong bonds with members of the staff. 

    Shea Baker answers some trivia from J.P. about how many career snaps he’s taken at Rice. He loves the make-up of this year’s offensive line and thinks they are much improved.

    Strength coach Hans Straub has a surprising reveal about who the pound-for-pound strongest player on the team is. He breaks down the differences this year with so many players having been in the program a few years. And technology constantly changes how he and his staff do their jobs. 

    Native Texan and Executive Director of Player Personnel & Recruiting Marco Regalado describes his coaching path in the Lone Star State and reveals how he got social media famous during the pandemic.

    Coach Bloomgren rounds out the show previewing the USC Trojans on both sides of the ball.

  • Jose Cruz Jr. Show 5-16-22

    In the final show of the season Bixby Family Head Baseball Coach Jose Cruz, Jr. discusses the series against MTSU and what he wants to see with the growth of the Owls program. He has seen some bright, young players.

    Sports Information Director Chuck Pool hops on to talk about his day-to-day duties and with the Owls going to Miami, he tells his favorite stories from his days with the Florida Marlins. One involves two iconic names in music.

    Justin Long and Thomas Burbank relay their stories about how they got to south Main. Justin is getting used to a new position on the field and Thomas has a unique part-time position off the field.

    Sixth-year pitcher Roel Garcia makes his first appearance on the show a memorable one. He relays the obstacles he’s overcome, a Wayne Graham story and his dream to play professional baseball.

    Bixby Family Head Baseball Coach Jose Cruz, Jr. cedes his usual opening segment to Owls Associate Coach Paul Janish. The “Assistant Coach of the Week” goes back in time to his recruitment to Rice and shares a memory playing against the rival team across town.

    Right fielder Guy Garibay, Jr. shocks J.P. with his distaste for a Texas culinary staple before a very memorable interview. He reveals his strong family ties and what the Owls need to do down the stretch.

    Freshman first baseman Aaron Smigelski talks about going back to his home state of North Carolina, adjusting to college life, his hockey roots, and how he ended up in Houston.

    Director of Athletics Dr. Joe Karlgaard joins Voice of the Owls J.P. Heath for another update around the department. They touch on fundraising, the updates to Rice Stadium, and action on the court, field and diamond.

    With Rice University's Be Bold campaign launched in the fall, Athletics has a goal to raise $100 million by the end of 2025. Joe gives an update on the generosity of several supporters. A great week of fundraising recently concluded with the 24-hour Challenge and the Night of Flight Scholarship Auction.

    Lindsey Edmonds' first season as women's basketball coach is discussed at length followed by talk about Scott Pera's squad. While the baseball team is rebuilding there have been a few bright spots on the mound and defensively lately. Spring football is discussed, with one major position change and some additions to the coaching staff.

    Joe and J.P. conclude with a discussion of the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award and Bob Quinn Award winners, Nicolle Lennon and Elijah Garcia.
