Multi-Talented Artist Vanessa Tignanelli sits down with Richard to discuss the many ongoing opportunities and projects she has in several different artistic mediums and her purpose and goals as an artist.

Vanessa Tignanelli is a Canadian documentary photographer and videographer currently based in North Bay, Ontario, available for assignment. Combining her training in conceptual art, journalism and filmmaking, her work moves beyond the typical snapshot to the more significant environmental portrait, encouraging viewers to consider the notion of authenticity. She is interested in subjects that reconcile identities that we are taught cannot coincide by traditional society and stereotypes, working with themes confronting sexism, ageism and classicism.  The work celebrates resiliency and individuality, looks for hope in hardship, takes us to people living on the fringes of society, and calls for us to be comfortable there. Vanessa's work has been recognized by the Royal Family, NPAC National Photographs of the Year Awards, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and InFocus Photo Exhibit and Award. She is a graduate of the studio art program at University of Guelph and the photojournalism program at Loyalist College. Her work has appeared in publications such as The Globe and Mail, Bloomberg, VICE, Photographers Without Borders, CBC, National Post, Toronto Star, PhotoEd Magazine, The Waterloo Region Record and more.

Artistic Director of the On The Edge Fringe Festival Kelsey Ruhl sits down with Richard to discuss her personal path as an actress in Northern Ontario as well as the ever-growing On the Edge Fringe Festival.

Kelsey Ruhl is a Theatre Arts graduate of Canadore College. Ruhl first appeared in the docudrama Harold and Lorna and has since appeared in the feature films The Captive, Christmas with Tucker, Algonquin, Christmas Inheritance, Midnight Masquerade, Valentine Ever After, Crossword Mystery, Christmas at Cartwright’s and James Vs. His Future Self; working alongside actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Nicholas Campbell and James Brolin. As well as appearing in the television series’ Slasher, Hard Rock Medical, Carter, Letterkenny and Unsettled. Kelsey has also worked on numerous stage productions and is a proud member of the Proscenium Club, a touring theatre group that premieres new Canadian works. Kelsey is the Artistic Director of the “On the Edge Fringe Festival” in North Bay, which will soon celebrate its eighth summer of Fringe. In March of 2019, Kelsey launched the Sun Dog Theater Festival, a sister festival to On the Edge. With her commitment to the Proscenium Club and her lead hand in the operations of two yearly festivals, Kelsey continues to make North Bay a provincially recognized hub for theatre, enriching the vibrancy of her northern community by providing professional quality fine arts to its residents, and bringing vitality to the local economy.

Jennifer Allison returns home to North Bay with her business Art and Sole Academy and sits down with Richard to discuss her career and creative process as a fashion and footwear designer, markers, artist and educator.

Jennifer Allison is a fashion and footwear designer, maker, artist and educator. Upon graduating from the Ryerson University Fashion Design program, Jennifer has had the opportunity to live and work throughout Canada, United States, South America, Europe and Asia fine tuning her craft while gaining industry experience designing for various companies such as Aldo, Abercrombie and Fitch, Awamaki, Pour La Victoire as well as several other private labels. Her designs have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, In Style, Elle and Flare Magazine to name a few and have been worn by reputable icons such as Cameron Diaz, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively and Rihanna. In 2014,  Jennifer launched the Art and Sole Academy as a way to share her love for design, traditional craft and the "slow fashion" movement. After operating Art and Sole out of Toronto, ON  for 5 successful years,  Jennifer made the decision to return to her roots and in March 2020 relocated the studio to her hometown, North Bay, ON.

Virtual Artist Marianne Vander Dussen discusses with Richard about how the pandemic has changed her practice and medium as an artist and the potential one holds within their life.

Marianne Vander Dussen is a professional artist, painting instructor, and teacher (BEd, MEd, OCT). As a self-taught artist, her mission is to empower artists of all ages and skill levels to feel confident in their art and to develop their own innate potential. Marianne feels passionately about lifelong learning and is always striving to improve her teaching and painting practice, while embracing transparency to bring her followers through the authentic process of making good art (it isn’t always pretty). When not in the studio, Marianne is actively investing in real estate (4 rental properties and counting), or actively chasing her twin toddlers as they conveniently bolt in opposite directions.

Executive Director of Creative Industries in North Bay, Jaymie Lathem, sits down with Richard on today’s episode to not only discuss what it’s like to push yourself as an artist, but the ways we can beautify the community with art and projects Creative Industries is doing to help with this movement.

Jaymie is an emerging artist based out of Northern Ontario. She studied drawing & painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Alberta College of Art and Design. She received her BFA from Nipissing University in 2011. Jaymie remains a practicing visual artist with a focus in drawing and has exhibited work throughout Ontario. Over the past decade Jaymie has worked in various community based and creative sector organizations across the Nipissing Region. She has a strong passion for the arts and believes North Bay and it’s surrounding community can be a thriving creative base in the North.

Primarily focused in drawing and themes of memory and identity, her work plays with the amount of visual information needed to identify a gesture, a part of the body, or an expression. Her work explores realism with highly rendered sections alongside abstraction and absent forms.  Her blacked-out, erased figures evoke a poignant sense of loss, suppression and eroding memories of what was and wasn’t.

Content Creator Kevin Love sits down with Richard to discuss his beginnings, journey to Canada and his adventure to break into the media industry with his business K. Love Productions.

Kevin Love was born and raised on the small island of Nassau, Bahamas. From a young age, he had an interest in the field of arts and entertainment. With an active imagination, he took it upon himself to learn the art of acting. It started with performing on stage in school, to acting on stage in college and local theatre. This eventually evolved to creating a YouTube channel. He then moved on to performing for his local church and lead their Drama Team.  Kevin, being able to act in a few films, was granted the opportunity to see the production side of the entertainment industry. It then became clear that he was interested in gaining more knowledge of being behind the camera. Kevin began doing research on the process of filmmaking, resulting in him creating a few short films for himself. Still being a part of his local church, he branched away from acting and joined the media team, starting with lighting the stage and leading to camera operations. This is where Kevin learned how to Direct the cameramen and operate industry-standard equipment. At this point, his wife, Ashley, noticed the glow on his face whenever he was behind a camera. With her encouragement, they pursued various avenues to get the proper training to film and edit videos professionally.  This led them to travel abroad to North Bay, to study at Canadore College in the TV Broadcasting and Video Editing Program. During his two-year course, Kevin has built relationships and took advantage of the opportunities presented before him. Kevin aspires to be an elite Camera Operator and Video Editor. Although his studies are completed, he takes it upon himself to further improve his skill by being self-taught. Up and coming digital media creator Darren Summersby discusses his changes and growth as an artist in today’s industry and his adapting to it with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Darren Summersby was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. First introduced to performing arts at the age of 7, Darren has taken part in over 50 productions both on stage and off. During his high school years, Darren took part in the Sears Drama Festival (now the NTS Drama Festival) winning both Awards of Merit for Stage Managing and Award of Excellence at the the Distract and Provincial levels for his role of Larry Dixon in Colours in the Storm (The Company). Darren is trained in vocals, having won several first place ribbons at the Kiwanis Music Festival.Darren’s interest in film began in 2010 when he was cast in the short film The Autumn Girl and 2012 for the horror-musical film Stage Fright with Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. From there, he became his passion in the film industry. In his senior year of high school, Darren won gold in the Film and Television category at Skills Ontario, going on to represent Team Ontario in Film and Television at the National level. Following high school, he directed and produced a micro-short film entitled Moving On which was selected in nearly a dozen International Film Festivals. He studied at Sheridan College in the Honours Bachelor of Film and Television Program. During his time at Sheridan, Darren interned with the popular children network YTV. Darren had the honour of directing the first-ever Musical Short Film as a thesis film in his program at Sheridan. The film, What Comes Next, has gone on to not only be selected into multiple international film festivals but to win Best Film at several festivals around the world. ​Darren now resides in North Bay, Ontario.
