Your best or worst middle-school memories

An 11-year-old Iowa boy with terminal cancer has requested racing stickers so they can be affixed to his casket at his funeral. "We’re just trying to do as much as we can with him while he’s here," Caleb Hammond's uncle, Chris Playle, told the Des Moines Register. Donations have been pouring in from other racers, the Associated Press reports. Hammond also had the thrill of a lifetime over the weekend, when he drove a stock racecar during a Saturday race set up just for him, and took first place. "A goal of his was to be able to drive a race car when he got older," John Hammond, Caleb's dad, told the Oskaloosa Herald. "It's like a dream come true."

On September 6, 1972, Sharyn Rubin and Eric Schlesinger found love in an elevator--literally. That was where the pair, then students at Philadelphia's Temple University, first caught each other's eyes in a campus elevator. A few days later, Rubin greeted Schlesinger at a '50s-themed mixer by saying, "Hi, Mr. Elevator Man," and they eventually got married. But after 42 years of wedded bliss, Sharyn died last year after a long battle with colon cancer.

A plaque commemorating the couple's meeting now hangs inside the elevator where they met, and on Friday--the day before what would have been Sharyn's birthday--a formal ceremony will be held to highlight the plaque--and their commitment to one another.
