If you are not able to counsel with tears, you're not counseling the way Jesus did (Matthew 23:37; John 11:35). Biblical counseling is not as biblical as it needs to be if it does not happen in a context of compassion for the struggling soul. That type of "counseling context" transcends the counseling office; I'm also talking about marriages, families, homes, churches, work environments, and any other place where you're helping someone with God's Word.

The more you want someone to change, and the more you are pulling for someone to change, and the more you’ll be tempted to feel too much pressure regarding your role in the change process. Here is one thing that you must remember: if a person wants to change, he can in spite of your inadequacies. The grace of God is more vital than your strengths and weaknesses or their hopelessness and resistance.

Everybody suffers. It does not matter who you are. It doesn’t matter who you belong to—the world or God’s family. Suffering is suffering, and nobody is exempt from it. The difference between Christian and non-Christian suffering is how we view and respond to it. When the world suffers, they lose hope. When God’s children suffer, they grow in confidence that God is there and working on the believer’s behalf.

The most satisfying relationship a person can have with another is when they are mutually sharing their personal experiences with God. They cannot be more honest, transparent, humble, vulnerable, courageous, and life-giving. Though you can’t be this way with everyone, it’s vital to have one person in your life with whom you can penetrate the barrier of loneliness.

Telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth is a good goal, but it is not always wise to reveal everything that you know within any relationship. There is a time to be quiet and a time to speak, and you must know the dangers of withholding truth and speaking the truth. Do you discipline your children? How do you do it? When it comes to corrective care, how does your child experience it? Just as important, what is your motive behind your discipline? Anytime you’re talking about parental discipline, you want to make sure you are beginning at the right place, which is with the Lord. The Bible says, “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves” (Hebrews 12:6).

Are you shaped and controlled by the self-awareness that you are a bit player in a grander epic?
