Gifted :: The Body

1 Corinthians 12:12-31

The “basics” of Spiritual gifts (see last week’s sermon) seem pretty amazing. A diversity of gifts unified by the work of the triune God in a local church is a grand vision, but what about a real church full of maturing, struggling sinners? In this week’s passage, the Apostle Paul gives us some helpful teaching on how an actual “body” of Christ must fight against the temptations of dropping out or taking over and progressively become one body with many members.

God wisely ordains our circumstances such that we grow in faith, not in ourselves, but in the one who rescued us in the first place. It’s an all out evacuation of the mixed multitude that is the people of the Exodus. They grab their kids, luggage, and animals and start on a long amazing journey that will be filled with hard yet good experiences designed by God to grow them in faith. First stop is a dead end (literally) situation with water on one side and Pharaoh's army on the other. There has been a build up in the book of Exodus (mostly origin story of Moses) that quickly escalates into a very dramatic narration of the ten plagues. These plagues, or “blows”, increase in severity incrementally until the Egyptian comfort, economy, health, and spiritual confidence is in shambles. The killer blow winds up taking out every first born male in the land. Except for those families that take shelter from the impending judgment.
