A just-ignited love affair between the outfitter, Sam, and his summer intern, Lisl, is a secret held from Lisl's Swiss boyfriend who has come with her for the summer, but not from Sam's wife, Elsie, whose peculiar upbringing has left her in a self-protective cocoon of apathy. The guest riders bring their own anxieties, pre-dispositions, and luckily, courage. Sam is a headstrong, impatient leader who tangles with Lenore, a writer who has come on the trip to write an article about it. When Meg, another guest, breaks her leg, the group must separate in order for Sam to get her back to civilization. The storm hits and Lisl finds herself in charge of the remaining riders and horses. She gets in trouble trying to rescue the horses, and Elsie is presented with a terrible choice while trying to rescue Lisl. When Sam catches up to them no one knows who is alive and who is dead, and Sam himself is a changed man.

Great read!

A very well woven and fascinating story about an incredibly devastating and unique real-life weather event. Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I was finished (really, I read it in a day). The characters bring the hurricane alive in a way that makes you feel as if you're a part of what's happening. Great plot twists make it not "cliche".

I felt like I was there

Powerfully described the infamous hurricane and its devastation in Central Virginia. I felt like I was there.

A teriffic read especially for anyone who lived in Virginia when Camille sruck.

Harrowing, Yet Redemptive

I was compelled to read Riding To Camile, which is set amidst the landscape where I have made my home this last decade. More than offering an entertaining plot and engaging characters (which it does quite neatly!), this story allowed me to realize something very important about my new homelandâsomething that I didn't "get" before. There is a deep-set fear of "what could happen" in the Rockfish Valley, which I'd noticed and vaguely wondered about.
