It is such a fantastic book!!

This book was so wonderful!! It wasn't your typical knight in shining armor and damsel in distress, it was so much better than that. The knight was smart, and he didn't enjoy killing. The damsel loved him, but promised--not to another man, but to the church! It was so sweet, and so exciting! I really loved it!!!

1315. England is in the grip of the Great Famine. Torrential rains have fallen through all of 1314 and show no signs of abatement. The common people are on the brink of starvation. Elizabeth Ashwell's historical fiction novel An Honourable Estate is set in the County of Lancaster, Wigan Parish, in the North of England. Mabel de Haigh holds the manor house of Haigh through hereditary rights and resides there with her husband, William Bradshaigh. Theirs is a deep love of 25 years.

The Earl of Lancaster is the feudal lord of Wigan and his minion, Robert Holland, is punctual with collection of dues owing to His Lord, the Earl. Neither Mabel and William nor the villagers have money or trade in kind to pay the dues and still survive.

William intensely dislikes the Earl of Lancaster for his brutal execution of Piers Gaveston, beloved friend of Edward II, which he witnessed during his 4 years Knight's compulsory service under Lancaster.

We follow William as he struggles to remain alive, yet provides compassionate care for those attacked by Scots, who are also starving. His anguish that he cannot contact Mabel haunts him. William has one slight chance, if he plays his cards right, to redeem himself with Edward II.

Really enjoyed this instalment in the series! I loved learning more about Holly and Will and was happy with how things turned out for them! The snippets with Adam and Eliza May as well as Mab have me really looking forward to the next book too! I'm also hoping Sin gets a book! I was really interested to finally meet him and would love to know how he's getting on with his sisters since discovering who he really was!

My favourite kind great series of books I do suggest starting from the beginning to really enjoy each person's story and how they link up.

Engaging and entertaining!

Great story line, held my interest until the end. Easy to listen to and follow along, perfect format for at the gym or folding laundry. was initially unsure of the genre but ultimately found unfamiliar things described and explained so well I could picture them myself. Definitely a must for the romantic fiction fan!

Another fine story set in ancient Mesopotamia

Unlike the other book by Shauna Roberts that I reviewed, this one is little different. In this story the male MC, who's name I cannot spell just like the female MC, has been infatuated with the female MC since he first saw her as a little boy. Sad part is that she didn't even know he existed until he killed her husband in a battle that takes place outside the pages of this book. Now that she does know about him, she is certainly not in love with him and keeps trying to put off his proposals of marriage for as long as she can.

She is a princess of Sumer. He is the newly appointed governor of the territory that his army has just conquered. He has just delivered her third child, the son of her now deceased husband. How will he ever convince her to marry him. He vows to never give up and wait as long as it takes. In the meantime, he has vowed to watch over her and her children and let no one harm them.

I don't think it is a spoiler to say she eventually falls in love with him and agrees to marry him, since it is afterall a love story. But WOW what she puts him through before she ever gets to that point. You have got to listen to this story. Shauna Roberts does a fine job of weaving a tale of love and betrayal set in era that she know quite a lot about since she has a Phd and has taught courses in ancient Mesopotamia at the college level.

You can't help but care about the two MCs and want for both of them to get exactly what they want.

Hollie Jackson is a wonderful narrator and has a beautiful voice. Her voices for the male characters are as believable as those of the female ones, and they are varied enough that the listener has no trouble telling who is speaking.

If you like a good romance novel that is not too sappy, then Claimed by the Enemy is the right book for you.

A true story that will grip your heart!

This book is exciting, interesting, and compelling from first to last for a number of reasons: first, Dan and Suzanne are great story tellers, and reading the book transports one to the reality of a world in disarray, to a time when easy, simple, country living in a community where nearly everyone was related was turned upside down by war. The narrative is easy to follow and draws the reader into the storyline so well that one can experience what it was like to live during those incredibly difficult times.

Second, it is informative. We usually think of the massive battles of the Civil War and fail to understand how much guerrilla action and revenge follow-up actually occurred. We often don't understand about those areas like Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky where there was no clear-cut north-south dichotomy, but families, counties, and sections of the state were divided. People who never owned slaves fought for the south for reasons for always clear to them.

Third, it is a powerful love story where the joyous and tragic events of one couple, Lizzie and Alexander, played out against the background of the war and the events that followed. The reader will wind up enthralled with these two lovers. They will eventually pull at the heart-strings.

Finally, it is a real story based on real events. Dan and Suzanne have done excellent research. These are not made-up characters or events, and, as we all know, truth is often more compelling and interesting than fiction. These people happen to be my family, but even if you are not related to the Chiltons, the Civil War affected the families of so many that it will be very easy for any reader to relate. And they have provided a family tree at the back to which the reader can easily refer to keep all these Chiltons straight.

You will enjoy the book! I highly recommend your obtaining a copy. -David Lawrence

Fascinating emotional study set in pre-war England

Mary Renault is overwhelmingly best known for her historical novels set in ancient Greece. But she began her career as a novelist closer to home, writing about personal relationships in the England of the 1930s and 1940s. The link can be found in "The Charioteer", published in 1945, which was followed only a year later by "The Last of the Wine". Although both titles belong to the world of ancient Athens, "The Charioteer" is actually set in an English hospital in the aftermath of Dunkirk.

"Kind are her Answers" was Renault's second novel, published in 1940 but wholly pre-war in every way. It is told from the point of view of Dr Kit Anderson, a young general practitioner who lives with his beautiful but self-centred and unloving wife in a small town not far from London. Like so many of Renault's heroes, Kit is portrayed as well-nigh perfect (within the inevitable limits of human nature), but doomed to emotional turmoil through the inevitable entanglements with women. This is clear from the book's title, the opening line of Thomas Campion's poem of 1617 which includes the lines, "Lost is our freedom,/When we submit to women so:/Why do we need 'em/When in their best they work our woe?" Anderson is clever, generous, and high-principled, but nevertheless finds himself in a difficult position when his wife continues to reject his advances long after a near-fatal stillbirth. Inevitably, he is then thrown together with Chrissie, a charming free-spirited actress whom he quickly comes to see as his ideal soulmate. Add the extra pressure of a doctor's heavy case load and routine responsibility for people's life or death, a crotchety stiffnecked senior partner, and the need to avoid compromising either Chrissie's honour or his medical ethics, and Kit faces an almost impossible obstacle course.

Even so early in her career, Renault was already showing deep insights into human nature and an inclination to dissect ethical dilemmas with an unforgivingly honest eye. Some readers may be upset by her lifelong tendency to see the best in her male characters and the worst - or at least quite a lot of bad faith - in her female ones. On the face of it, "Kind are her Answers" is a simple, rather superficial psychological study; but whatever you think of its construction, it is hard to avoid being swept up in the emotional whirlwind it engenders. If you like any of Renault's later books, I don't think you will be disappointed in this early one.

Worth reading

Not Mary Renault's best but still a good read.

It is a long time since I read Crusoe's Daughter, so I did not remember the details well. I really enjoyed this reading, although at first I was not sure of the narrator - she does a fair job of conveying Polly's changing age, but seems rather more comfortable in the middle years. This is not a book for those who want a galloping plot, with rapid action and cliff hanging moments - this is the evocation of a life rooted in a particular place, of a child gradually understanding the world around her, of an early love that colours the decades to come... The marsh, the Yellow House, the curiously distant and unknowable adults, the shining wonder of first love are all vividly conveyed. I will be downloading more Jane Gardam!
