Length: 10 hrs and 27 mins

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 16th century, as it is now, the Burren, on the western seaboard of Ireland, was a land of grey stone forts, fields of rich green grass, and swirling mountain terraces. It was also home to an independent kingdom that lived peacefully by the ancient Brehon laws of their forebears.
On the first eve of May, 1509, hundreds of people from the Burren climbed the gouged out limestone terraces of Mullaghmore Mountain to celebrate the great May Day festival, lighting a bonfire and singing and dancing through the night, then returning through the grey dawn to the safety of their homes. But one man did not come back down the steeply spiralling path. His body lay exposed to the ravens and wolves on the bare, lonely mountain for two nights...and no one spoke of him, or told what they had seen. And when Mara, a woman appointed by King Turlough Don O'Brien to be judge and lawgiver to the stony kingdom, came to investigate, she was met with a wall of silence....

    Terrific
The Burren series combines interesting, well-drawn characters, history, as well as mysteries. The Brehon, Mara is both brehon, and the head of a law school in the Burren (West Coast of Ireland) At the beginning of each chapter is information about the Brehon Laws that ruled Celtic Ireland The time is 1509 or thereabouts, which is pretty much at the end of that influence, Henry VIII has just become king in Ireland. So, In addition to everything else, the contrast between the English and Irish cultures (even to dress) adds interest to the story. The search for the solution to the crime is well-done as well . I love the whole series, but I would recommend going in order, if nothing else, because of the relationships between the characters
    Five Stars
    Very fun historical fiction.
    Lady Judge
I have been fascinated to be introduced to this period of Irish history. The history is well researched and the writer is able to put you into the setting and hold your interest in many different ways. I am looking forward to reading more of the series.
    My Lady Judge
A good read - the background of ancient Irish/celtic law is very interesting. The problem is that once you have read one book of the series you want to read more.
    Light read.
Light reading and not a bad story however I found the repetition of the descriptive annoying.

    A good read
This was one of the first that I read in this series and I enjoyed so much that I went looking for others, and now have bought 5-6 of the series. I have completely been drawn into the lives of the characters that I feel ave been brought to life and introduced me to a time of history in Ireland I knew little about before. I love a good mystery and this story line keeps me involved and keeps me reading.
    Second in excellent series
This is an excellent series set in Ireland in the 1500's. In addition to the interesting plot and characters, there is a lot of information about the land, the people, and the culture of that time and place. Just be careful: "Michaelmas Tribute" is the same book as "A Secret and Unlawful Killing."
    Used books
I love these mysteries, and often I can not find them in my local library so this is a very good source for them
    Love it
Great reading, the right amount of suspense, romance, history, and fun. I feel as if I am there with Mara on the Burren
Fraud! Duplicate! Same as "Secret and Unlawful Killing"
The is the same book as "Secret and Unlawful Killing". Good book but I got conned into paying for it twice thinking it was the third of the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
A fascinating blend of little known history and compelling fiction.
Convicted by the Puritans in 1660 for being a Quaker, Mary Dyer courageously faced the gallows on the Boston Commons. Often misunderstood by her husband and six children, she turned her back on those who loved her for the higher principle of protesting the anti-Quaker Laws.
What must it have been like to stand beneath the gallows and watch a loved one make the ultimate sacrifice for something you do not fully understand? Mary Dyer's sacrifice helped pave the way for our first amendment rights of the freedom of religion and speech and pointed out the need for the separation of church and state.

    Puritans and Quakers
After more than 50 years, I became interested in the details of Quaker, Mary Dyer's life. I saw the statue of Mary Dyer in the Boston Common when I was in college. The remarkable thing is that I met a relative of hers. I asked her about relationship and she said we never speak of this. The Puritans who came here for religious freedom found that their freedom was dependent on their strict religious leaders. Those who thought differently, had to move to Rhode Island and other areas or face severe penalties. The plight of the Quakers was worse. They faced hanging in Boston. They were thought to be practicing witchcraft. Mary was the one woman Quaker to be hung. It took many years for Leaders in Boston to change their thinking leading to creating the memorial statue.
    A Five Star Read
A five star read! The life of Mary Dyer is truly inspiring and captivating. Having her story told through the eyes of a fictitious sister provided me with a unique perspective of what it must have been like for her family as they watched her protest the harsh, anti-Quaker laws of the puritans. I wished The Sister of Mary Dyer: The High Price of Freedom could have ended differently, but it didn't. Reality is sometimes extremely cruel. Because Mary Dyer was willing to pay the ultimate price, our founding father included the first amendment to the constitution that established our freedom of religion and speech.

A novel that makes history live
The Sister of Mary Dyer: The High Price of Freedom is a fascinating story about the origins of our freedom of religion. The author weaves interesting historical facts into the story of this brave woman and her family. I'd seen the statue of Mary Dyer in Boston, and bought the book because I was curious about the woman.
    When Sacrifice is Made
This book is why historical fiction is so important to me. It compels me to learn more about the past and the people who played important roles in it.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Communist's Daughter is a sweeping novel of love and betrayal spanning the trenches of the Great War to the horrors of Spain and China. Norman Bethune was a visionary whose dedication touched millions. Rebelling in childhood against his father's religion, he finds a calling himself, saving lives on the battlefield. In Republican Spain he fulfills his idealism, yet before long politics destroy his romance and drive him to seek refuge in China. Here, in service to a man eventually known as Mao Zedong, Bethune begins this account of his life and his cherished beliefs for the only person who still makes a future seem possible: the daughter he has never seen.
    Members Reviews:
    A powerful indictment of war
The Communist's Daughter is a powerful novel about war, politics, and betrayal during two of the 20th Century's many horrible armed conflicts. Norman Bethune comes through as a deeply flawed, but also heroic, human being. It's a great reminder of what wars do to people.
    Meditations of a medicine man
There's a rising number of novelists using fiction to produce biographies. For some of these, imaginary children prove a useful ploy through which to depict a life. Peter Carey's "True History of the Kelly Gang" is an outstanding example: the notorious bushranger writes a long missive to an unseen daughter in the midst of a siege by policemen. Dennis Bock has followed a similar course, with a similar character. Norman Bethune, who resides among the icons of Canadian history, is given us as a man beset on many sides by a variety of enemies. In this case, it's the Japanese Imperial Army in China, the Fascisti in Spain and scattered personal opponents - and his own father. Bock, using Bethune's "letters" to a daughter he's never seen, applies well-honed skills to animate an idol.
Bethune, of course, is the man best known for inventing the M.A.S.H. unit to rapidly treat the wounded in military engagements. Bringing experience of military field hospitals from the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, Bethune relocates to China where the Japanese invasion is being resisted by Mao's Communist forces. During his shift of site, he has learned of his daughter, born of his Madrid lover, Kajsa von Rothman. A Swedish anarchist, Kajsa brings light into Bethune's sombre outlook. Bock's portrayal of Bethune's view of her well captures a man's intense sense of real love discovered after a long, sometimes futile quest.
In the letters to his daughter, Bethune imparts his life in brief, but intense sketches. Bock doesn't provide a sequential scenario, but lets Bethune skip about in time and space. In a less skillful writer, this would be distracting and perhaps difficult. As a series of seven missives, listed as "Envelope One" through "Seven", each titled in typescript in the way Bethune might have produced with his dilapidated typewriter, the only focus is how the surgeon might have imparted his life to his daughter. We learn that his Ontario childhood lacked stability. Bethune's parents, particularly his father, were evangelicals, leaving Norman with minimal options. At a young age, however, he learned that the road to Damascus is not a one-way street. Revelation can lead away from divine mysteries and dogmas as readily as attract the unwary to them. For Norman, it was the knowledge that he, and every other human is alone.

    good historical fiction, great narrator
Loved this book but the sudden end left me a little perplexed and wanting for more. I hope the next book in this series will be available soon. There are many relations of historical figures mentioned and explained; it will be good to go back and listen to the book a second time. Unlike the English version (narrator) the German narrator is doing an excellent job.

    Publisher's Summary:
This brilliant, compelling and unusual novel - part mystery, part philosophy and part social history - is set in the early years of the 19th century. The narrator is an inmate in Bedlam, the London mental asylum, where he is chained to a wall in unspeakably disgusting conditions. Yet he is witty, urbane and seemingly sane - he philosophizes on freedom, on love and love lost, and on the fleeting nature of happiness.
As this beautifully constructed story unfolds we learn about his everyday life in the asylum, about his life before Bedlam and the answers to the critical questions: Why is this man here? What exactly has he done? The Curative has been wowing listeners with its unique exploration of the devious in human affairs.
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliant but very disturbing
It was brilliantly written and performed. Compelling story wth extraordinarily developed main character. I can't say I always enjoyed listening to it - the circumstances of the main character and others were very distressing at times. The book is thoroughly researched and the fact that what the book portrays is historically accurate makes it especially disturbing.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Heroes' Welcome is the incandescent sequel to the best-selling R&J pick My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You. Its evocation of a time deeply wounded by the pain of WWI will capture and beguile listeners fresh to Louisa Young's wonderful writing, and those previously enthralled by the stories of Nadine and Riley, Rose, Peter, and Julia.
It's 1919, and Britain is realising that it is no longer at war. Now, Nadine and Riley, Rose, and Peter and Julia, must try to regain a sense of normality. But long shadows cast by the war dim the potential joys of peacetime, and matters of the heart prove arduous and bewildering.
Normality doesn't seem to exist the way it did, and there is no going back' to anything. What must give, for happiness to stand a chance? For those who fought, those who healed, and those left behind, 1919 is a year freighted with perilous beginnings, unavoidable realities, and gleams of indestructible hope.
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for My Dear I Wanted to Tell You:
"This novel is a triumph" (Elizabeth Jane Howard)
"Every once in a while comes a novel that generates its own success, simply by being loved." (The Times)
"Birdsong for the new millennium" (Tatler)
"Powerful, sometimes shocking, boldly conceived, it fixes on war's lingering trauma to show how people adapt - or not - and is irradiated by anger and pity" (The Sunday Times)
"[A] tender, elegiac novel. Others have been here before, of course, from Sebastian Faulks to Pat Barker, but Young belongs in their company" (Mail on Sunday)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing
This book was a big disappointment, falling far short of 'My Dear ...'. It's not possible to write a critique without spoilers, so I will just say that I found some of the things done by some of the characters totally unbelievable. I would have liked more on how the saintly Nadine coped with a husband with a facial deformity, more on Riley's sister's reaction, more on how Riley developed relationships with the children who came into his life. And what of Nadine's Rome connections? Is there a third volume in the offing? These weaknesses overshadowed the aspects of the book which were well done, notably the way Young brings to light the trauma experienced by soldiers and their loved ones - trauma which did not stop after the men returned home. Dan Stevens is, again, simply superb.
    Welcome return of these characters
What made the experience of listening to The Heroes' Welcome the most enjoyable?
Dan Stevens' superb narration: he picks up where he left off in 'My Dear...', not a missed step in transition, and it made the experience of being in the company of these rounded characters once again all the more pleasurable.
What did you like best about this story?
I love Louisa Young's writing, and the way she gets under the skin of all her characters, so you feel you know them as well as you can ever hope to know yourself...

    Publisher's Summary:
The week before Christmas, 1929, Eoghan O'Keenan loses his factory job, and has to flee the slums of Chippendale with his seven-year-old sister Agnes. On the north side of Sydney at Lavender Bay, Olivia Greene is working on her latest millinery creations and dreaming of becoming the next Coco Chanel.
A job on the Harbour Bridge for Eoghan, designing couture for the Governor's wife for Olivia, and a chance meeting in the Botanic Gardens sees the beginning of an unconventional romance. From vastly different backgrounds, with absolutely nothing in common - from faith to wealth and class - it seems that the blue mile of harbour between Olivia and Eoghan will be the least of the obstacles ahead.
By mid-1932, as the construction of the Bridge is completed, the city is in chaos as the Great Depression begins to bite hard and the unemployed edge ever closer to a violent revolt. And then Eoghan disappears.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour, The Blue Mile is a tale of the both wild and calculated risks a city took to build a wonder of the world, and of those taken by ordinary people to save a great love, against all of the odds.
    Members Reviews:
    Unforgetable period piece, pitch-perfect narration
Would you listen to The Blue Mile again? Why?
Definitely! I have always been fascinated by the Great Depression, what people did to survive, the hope in the hopeless shanty towns, picking up and starting again. But I was never made aware of Australia's own history at that time. Throw in a terrific performance, a beautiful complex love story, and the urgency it all evokes... this is a fantastic novel.
Which character as performed by Zoe Ellerton-Ashley and James Harvy was your favorite?
Both narrators embodied their characters - Harvy depicted Eoghan's desperation, his hope, his love; Ellerton-Ashley was whimsical and somewhat flighty and over-dramatic, which were all required by Olivia's character. I want more from both these narrators; unfortunately, at this time, Audible does not have further offerings from either of them.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    No distance too Far
    Any additional comments?
Using the bridge as a symbol to cross the distance in class, social standing, religion between Olivia and Eoghan... beautiful depiction! From the opening scene where Eoghan is fired from his job and goes home drunk, hoping that his father won't be there to tan him for getting sacked... to the completion of the bridge's construction and the resulting joblessness and hopelessness... this is a beautiful, emotional snapshot of a time and place unknown to me.
Perhaps it ends a bit too neatly, but no other time period could have made it all work. The ending might have made me give the book 4 stars, but I loved the book too much for that. I plan on reading Kim Kelly's other novels soon!
