From the author of the best-selling My Last Duchess - and for any fans of Downton Abbey
In 1875, Sisi, the Empress of Austria is the woman that every man desires and every woman envies. Beautiful, athletic, and intelligent, Sisi has everything - except happiness. Bored with the stultifying etiquette of the Hapsburg Court and her dutiful but unexciting husband, Franz Joseph, Sisi comes to England to hunt. She comes looking for excitement and she finds it in the dashing form of Captain Bay Middleton, the only man in Europe who can outride her. Ten years younger than her and engaged to the rich and devoted Charlotte, Bay has everything to lose by falling for a woman who can never be his. But Bay and the Empress are as reckless as each other, and their mutual attraction is a force that cannot be denied.
Full of passion and drama, The Fortune Hunter tells the true story of a 19th-century Queen of Hearts and a cavalry captain, and the struggle between love and duty.

    An easy listen
Well written and excellently narrated by Clare Corbett, this is a an easy, gentle listen.
The pace is steady, having said that, there is not much really in the story to get your teeth into..and I did find myself wishing for the end sooner than it arrived. You do find yourself wishing that the Empress would get her hair cut at various stages of the book...so not so diffiult for the mind to wander!
The story did make me look up the various real life characters 'loosely' represented in the story, so I did learn a few new things, which is always good.
I am not sure if I will listen to another Daisy Goodwin novel, but I will certainly look up for other reads from this narrator, as she did an outstanding job.
    Ending let down the book
I enjoyed the book and the reading by Clare Corbett. It was a good illustration of life in a bygone age and of unconventional women - both the heiress and the empress. My only gripe is that the ending seemed contrived with the coincidences that end at the Grand National not sitting well alongside the pace of the book. As the book is loosely based on real people it is a shame it didn't go onto their marriage and the death of the 'hero'. This would have been a better end than leaving the story in Liverpool (Aintree).
    Great read
Will read again & again . Really liked this book.good very good exceptionally good goodgood. Good good
    boring and predictable
some bits were entertaining and ikept me curious, but on the whole it was predictable and tedious. I've read better mills and boon!
    BORING
What disappointed you about The Fortune Hunter?
    Predictable
What could Daisy Goodwin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Use some imagination, it just needed some more gumph
What didnt you like about Clare Corbetts performance?
    Not very convincing accents
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Boredom
    Any additional comments?

    Publisher's Summary:
The tragic story of Robert Falcon Scotts quest for the South Pole is brought to sparkling new life in this adventure novel.
It is one of the most famous quotes in the history of exploration: I am just going outside. I may be some time.
The story of how former cavalry officer Lawrence Oates came to deliver his brave last words, before walking bootless into a Antarctic blizzard so that Robert Falcon Scott and the other members of the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition might have a better chance of survival, is brilliantly reimagined in this epic novel based on fact. A hero of the Boer Wars, Oates joined Scotts second journey to Antarctica with dreams of winning the race to the South Pole for England. But small mistakes and bad luck plagued the mission from the start, and when they finally reached the Pole on January 17, 1912, Oates and Scott were heartbroken to find that Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them thereby more than a month. Little did they know, things were about to get much, much worse.

    Five Stars
    Excellent
    Ninety South
Robert Ryan's "Death on the Ice" is a novelization of Robert Falcon Scott's attempts on The South Pole.
In 1901, his first - "The Discovery Expedition" - achieved the feat of "The Furthest South" - just beyond 81 degrees, but he was beaten back by appalling weather before he could reach his ultimate goal. The 1911 "Terra Nova Expedition" won Scott his immortality. He and four companions reached The Pole, but died on the return journey, barely a day's march from salvation.
Scott's reputation has waxed and waned in the 100 years since his death. Initially lauded as the archetypal heroic Englishman, he has more recently been portrayed as a hapless incompetent. Even more recently, biographers such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes have returned to the man's defence. Robert Ryan takes a fairly even-handed view of the man in this dramatization. He is neither hero nor fool, rather a relatively ordinary man driven to extreme undertakings; flawed in some ways, resilient in others and, ultimately, as much a victim of bad luck as of his failings.
"Death on the Ice" tells the story from the points of view of Scott's companions and colleagues as well as his own; chiefly Ernest Shackleton, who accompanied Scott other first expedition and Lawrence Oates who died on the second. Again, Ryan steadfastly avoids the veneration of men who have been greatly lionised since and, as a result, presents us with a story that reads realistically, believably and sympathetically.
It is, nevertheless, a gripping read. Ryan's description of the terrible privations suffered by the polar explorers is deeply compelling and I struggled to put the book down. It's well written as a novel; Ryan is a prolific and accomplished novelist and it is clear that he researched his subject well enough to write with some considerable authority. Of course it remains "only" a novel, but, if of you know little or nothing of Scott's adventures, you may well be tempted to seek out his more authentic biographies.
A highly recommended boy's own adventure.
Well written and well researched - a good read
I enjoyed reading this book, even if we all know what happened to Scott's expedition to the South Pole.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Oriental Wife is the story of two assimilated Jewish children from Nuremberg who flee Hitlers Germany and struggle to put down roots elsewhere. When they meet up again in New York, they fall in love both with each other and with America, believing they have found a permanent refuge. But just when it looks as though nothing can ever touch them again, their lives are shattered by a freakish accident and a betrayal that will reverberate into the life of their American daughter. In its portrait of the immigrant experience, and of the tragic gulf between generations, The Oriental Wife illuminates the collision of American ideals of freedom and happiness with certain sterner old world virtues.

    Left wanting more
The Oriental Wife is about a young Jewish girl who flees Germany during Hitler's reign prior to World War II. After a series of adventures and heart breaks, she eventually lands (or docks) in New York City and reconnects with a childhood friend who also left Germany. The rest of the book is a story of their life together and all of the twists it takes.
This book was good, but I wasn't overwhelmed by it. It starts off strong, but kind of falls off in the last third. It seems like the characters could be developed better throughout the novel and the plot could have used more words dedicated to it. As I finished it, I was left wanting more. Nevertheless, it was a quick and easy read that worked well for vacation.
    Seamless, heartrending
I don't know what disappointed readers expected, but perhaps their expectations was the problem. In THE ORIENTAL WIFE, Evelyn Toynton gets out of the way of her characters and their story, writing prose so clean you can see yourself in it. This is a seamless, heartrending novel.
Surviving war torn Europe with hope
Another story of survival. They were children who survived one atrocity only to come to America and find that life can be just as difficult.
    YOUTH ESCAPE THE GERMAN POGROMS
Interesting book of young people leaving Germany before the progroms get them. They settle in New York and their tale unfolds from there. Good book. Not sure where the Oriental in the title comes from........... very fast read.
A literary novel with profound historical insight
Most effective was the slow uncovering of the characters' lives and unfulfilled dreams.
Toynton's language is rich, poetic. The final chapters left me stunned speecless.

    A fascinating story.
What did you love best about The Juno Letters?
Living in France as I do, near to Tours, which is featured in this book, the tributes are all around us to the brave young men of many nations who lost their lives, and, not too far away in Normandy are the Juno landings beaches, and Courseulles-sur-Mer so vital during D Day on the 6th June, 1944.It is very hard for me, even now to remember that this is a work of fiction, the depth of research and attention to detail bring alive all too horrifically the very real dangers facing collaborators during the wars and the bravery of the resistance and allies working behind enemy lines.
Which character as performed by Gary Regal was your favorite?
Gary Regal's narration of this audiobook was exceptional especially the pronunciation of the French place names.
Who was the most memorable character of The Juno Letters and why?
It would have to be Antoine. A friendship was forged in WWI between the author's grandfather, Private Andy Anderson and Antoine Bouchard, who although French was living in the Alsace region at the outbreak of the war and was forced to fight for Germany. Then, after WWI Andy returns home and becomes a chaplain and Antoine stays in France.
    Any additional comments?
This is such a fascinating story for anyone interested in WWI and WWII, I just could not put it down.
The story begins with an unexpected parcel, which arrives for Lawrence Hewitt from Courseulles-sur-Mer in France, it contains letters, they are addressed to his Grandfather Andy. The letters, which were written during WWII had been discovered hidden in a small cottage in Normandy and are from Andys friend Antoine Bouchard, but they were never posted
This story is a tribute to the author, Lawrence Hewitts Grandfather Andy. Armed with his grandfathers personal journals which he wrote as a soldier in the Great War, the author visited Paris in 2012 and followed in his footsteps. The journey he took and his visit to the Normandy landing beaches are the inspiration behind The Juno Letters.

For young Leonhard Euler, the Bernoulli family have been more than just friends. Master Johann has been a demanding mentor, and his sons have been Leonhard's allies and companions. But it is also a family torn by jealousy and distrust. Father and sons are engaged in a ruthless competition for prestige among the mathematical elites of Europe, especially the greatest prize: the Chair of Mathematics at the University of Basel, which Johann holds and his sons want. And now, their aspirations may have turned deadly. Lured into an investigation of the suspicious death of Uncle Jacob 20 years ago, Leonhard soon realizes there's more at stake than even a prominent appointment. Surrounded by the most brilliant - and cunning - minds of his generation, Leonhard is forced to see how dangerous his world is. His studies in mathematics have always been entwined with his thoughts on theology, and now, caught in a deadly battle of wills, he'll need both his genius and his faith to survive.
    Members Reviews:
    Euler at 18
This unusual historical novel is set in Basel, Switzerland, in 1725 and is narrated by the 18-year-old Leonhard Euler.
Leonhard, who was then a student in Basel, would go on to become one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, known for both the tremendous quantity and great originality of his work. Paul Robertson's portrayal of Euler includes several qualities of character consistent with the young man's later success, including diligence and self-discipline; an active imagination; and a passion for mathematics fueled by the conviction that his work glorified his Creator.
As Malcolm Gladwell might point out, the success of an "outlier" like Euler also can be partially explained by the exceptional opportunities available to him, especially the chance to work under Johann Bernoulli during the time when the techniques and applications of calculus were being developed. The Bernoulli family, which was brilliant but divided by rivalry and jealousy, is also a major part of Euler's life and Robertson's story.
As the story begins, Johann's sons Daniel and Nicolaus come back home to Basel for a visit, and Euler finds himself in the middle of the family's strife. Shortly after their arrival a local man is murdered, and the body is found in a trunk that seems to have connections to the Bernoullis. While studying the mathematical and physical laws of the universe, Euler also searches for the truth about the murder, an investigation involving the complex dynamics of the Bernoulli family and the power structure of the local university.
Highlights of the novel include Robertson's depiction of Euler and the Bernoullis and his rich descriptions of Basel and its university life and politics. Those interested in the history of mathematics or the relationship between mathematics and faith should find this book especially compelling.
    A truly elegant book
What an elegant book by Paul Roberston, a man whose other books I am going to search out. Paul writes about a time when men thought they could worship God by the study of math as well as they could sitting in a pew.
Let me quote a paragraph in the book where the main character is contemplating Newton's math of gravity:
The stars were vast, but their infinite sum still was only a finite portion of the sky.
