Publisher's Summary:
The Oriental Wife is the story of two assimilated Jewish children from Nuremberg who flee Hitlers Germany and struggle to put down roots elsewhere. When they meet up again in New York, they fall in love both with each other and with America, believing they have found a permanent refuge. But just when it looks as though nothing can ever touch them again, their lives are shattered by a freakish accident and a betrayal that will reverberate into the life of their American daughter. In its portrait of the immigrant experience, and of the tragic gulf between generations, The Oriental Wife illuminates the collision of American ideals of freedom and happiness with certain sterner old world virtues.

Left wanting more
The Oriental Wife is about a young Jewish girl who flees Germany during Hitler's reign prior to World War II. After a series of adventures and heart breaks, she eventually lands (or docks) in New York City and reconnects with a childhood friend who also left Germany. The rest of the book is a story of their life together and all of the twists it takes.
This book was good, but I wasn't overwhelmed by it. It starts off strong, but kind of falls off in the last third. It seems like the characters could be developed better throughout the novel and the plot could have used more words dedicated to it. As I finished it, I was left wanting more. Nevertheless, it was a quick and easy read that worked well for vacation.
Seamless, heartrending
I don't know what disappointed readers expected, but perhaps their expectations was the problem. In THE ORIENTAL WIFE, Evelyn Toynton gets out of the way of her characters and their story, writing prose so clean you can see yourself in it. This is a seamless, heartrending novel.
Surviving war torn Europe with hope
Another story of survival. They were children who survived one atrocity only to come to America and find that life can be just as difficult.
YOUTH ESCAPE THE GERMAN POGROMS
Interesting book of young people leaving Germany before the progroms get them. They settle in New York and their tale unfolds from there. Good book. Not sure where the Oriental in the title comes from........... very fast read.
A literary novel with profound historical insight
Most effective was the slow uncovering of the characters' lives and unfulfilled dreams.
Toynton's language is rich, poetic. The final chapters left me stunned speecless.
