When Jesus spoke a word and quelled a tempest, He was only doing what He's been doing since Creation! He "upholds all things by His powerful word," as we're about to read in Hebrews. On the one side of the equation you have prophets and angels, a donkey, a burning bush, a mysterious hand...and on the other side of the equation you have Jesus. Christians believe that we have eternal life right now, already, as a gift. So what does Paul mean when he tells Timothy to "lay hold of the eternal life...?" We need to be people of the "bottom line," but with a different equation! The worshipers of Mammon are good at filtering out things that don't matter, and focusing only on the return they'll get. Caution: You are an eternal being. Your choices today will affect you forever! If Christians pursue the wrong things here and now, we may have little to show for our efforts in our infinite future. Covetousness may be listed last in the Big Ten sins, but it's certainly not the least of our problems.Sometimes it seems our entire economy is driven by the desire to have more stuff. And the way to get more stuff is with more money. What's worse, churches and ministries have been sucked into this vortex of un-fillable emptiness.
