It was hard to hear the prophets over the escaping profits! Jesus came to the Temple in a particular manner that should have "rung a bell" or "struck a chord" in the minds of everyone there. "The Lord whom you seek shall suddenly come to His temple," Malachi had written. "He shall purify the sons of Levi." But while that prophecy was being fulfilled in real time, people were distracted. "What's Your sign?" The Jewish leaders asked Jesus the same question that we ask Him - and the whole world asks Him: "What sign do You show to us?" Or, more pointedly, "Do something that will prove that You're really the One sent from God!" Now, they often posed this challenge right after He had just performed a miracle - as in the story we'll read today from John, chapter 2. But His first sign was for a smaller audience. Signs reassure us! When you're driving in an unfamiliar place - and I think this applies whether you're using the GPS or the "dead reckoning" method of navigation - there's a sigh of relief when you see the road sign you're looking for.
