On this episode of the Healthy + Happy Podcast, Dr. Slade and special guest Dr. Ammara Khalid discuss that the way we've always done things isn't always the healthy way.   Holidays are a great opportunity to change a system because you really can’t change a system without being in the system.  Take advantage of opportunities to be together with your family to make healthy changes.   Remember, you’re not supposed to be good at something when you first start doing it.  Learn what Healthy looks like. Most of the time, Healthy Works!   

-Work with a therapist, coach, or support system to gain skills and a healthy understanding of what changes need to happen to help your family relationship become healthier and happier.   

-Create a plan to rewire the rules of the system.  

-Decide how you want to engage differently with your family.  

-Give yourself the resources to execute and act on the plan.  

-Practice. It takes time–it will be messy in the beginning.  

Awareness and insight about how you fall into traps helps you learn how to stay out of the traps.  Learning how to stand up for yourself takes time!
