Publisher's Summary:
In the final installment of John P. Marquand's classic espionage series, Mr. Moto returns - 15 years after his previous adventure. After serving his country as a paratrooper in World War II, Jack Rhyce takes on an even more dangerous mission when he becomes a secret agent in the early years of the Cold War. Now he and fellow spy Ruth Bogart have been dispatched to Tokyo to foil an assassination attempt on a leading liberal politician. Murder is only the first part of this nefarious Communist plot; the ultimate objective is to stir up anti-American sentiment in a country that has formed close bonds with its former adversary in the West.
Undercover as do-gooders employed by the Asia Friendship League, Jack and Ruth are met at the airport by Mr. Moto, a would-be tour guide who offers to make their stay more hospitable. The American spies immediately suspect that there is more to Mr. Moto than meets the eye. But whose side is he on? To stop the cunning mastermind behind the sinister scheme, Jack and Ruth will have to learn the secrets of post-war Japan as quickly as possible. The mysterious Mr. Moto might just be their greatest ally, or their worst enemy.
First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, John P. Marquand's popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels were the inspiration for eight films starring Peter Lorre.

Mr. Moto's Last Bow
If you are reading this, you probably got here via the Mr. Moto movies of Peter Lorre. Same here.
I read the novels when they were released in paperback back in the 80s and my observation at the time was that I liked them, but they were totally unlike anything in the movies. Fast forward 30 years and I still love the Peter Lorre version, but when I saw the novels were on audiobook, I bought them all, two at a time.
The audiobook version made the book really "pop," and the narrator, Paul Christy, has an amazingly good range for representing different characters.
This book was the last in the series and it was set in postwar Japan. The two lead characters are American agents tracking down red agitators in Japan. Unlike the similar pairs in previous Moto books, they aren't thrown together by circumstance, but a mission. You don't know exactly where Mr. Moto stands, but once things become clear, he and the Americans work together to stop an assassination attempt.
I think I enjoyed the prewar books much more because reality (the Cold War) is in place and obviously Mr. Moto failed to stop the war party in 1930s Japan. This book also has a jarring ending unlike the previous books. When I finished I just sat there thinking "Wow." And I had read the book years ago â but not in rapid succession with all the others. I think this created more context for the novels.
I am, however, convinced by the ending that John Marquand intended to continue the Mr. Moto series and for whatever reason (Like the Bataan Death March) popularity for the character ever came back. I am sorry about that.
I enjoyed this book, but I suggest you read it last.
Four Stars
good
Somewhat verbose, but very interesting and enjoyable
This is the second Mr. Moto spy novel by John P. Marquand that I read. I read Marquandâs first Moto tale that was published in 1935, prior to World War II, and which anticipated the future war between Japan and the US. This is Marquandâs sixth and last Moto thriller.
