  • Episode 65- Eric W. Ross: What is Cultural Studies and why is it important?

    Today we are joined by Eric Ross. Eric lives in Washington, DC and is a Star Trek fan, a Dungeon Master, a Taco Bell enthusiast and a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at George Mason University. He writes about museums, and conflicts over history and memory. Since 2017, he has also been an instructor teaching intro to Social Justice classes to first year college students.

    Additionally, Mr. Ross is an active member of the George Mason chapter of the Association of American University Professors (AAUP). Before graduate school, he spent two years working with Americorps in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Eric is not on social media, so don’t expect to fine him anywhere but at George Mason Univ.

Olin currently serves as Associate Director of Bands at Oregon State University where he oversees and directs all aspects of the OSU Marching and Athletics Bands program. Hannum is a sought-after arranger for marching ensemble. His arrangements have been performed by competitive and non-competitive groups at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level, across the west coast but primarily in California.     Today we are joined by Dr. Andrea Haverkamp. Dr. Haverkamp (she/her) recently completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering with a doctoral minor in Queer Studies at Oregon State University. Her research explores the experiences of transgender and gender nonconforming students in engineering and computer science, such as their sources of community support and collective resiliency in the face of adversity.

    Dr. Haverkamp serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Engineering, Social Justice, and Peace, an open-source scholarly publication exploring the intersections of engineering and inequity across the globe. She also has involvement in American Society for Engineering Education and Society of Women Engineers. Before her Ph.D., Dr. Haverkamp has worked as an engineer in the Federal government and served as a science education volunteer with the Peace Corps in Liberia.

    She is currently a labor organizer supporting healthcare and hospital workers in Seattle with United Food & Commercial Workers Local 21, and previously served as President of Coalition of Graduate Employees, American Federation of Teachers Local 6069 at Oregon State University. She is a dual-card International Workers of the World union member and also a member of Socialist Alternative.   • Episode 58- Dr. Avi Loeb: Daring Harvard scientist defies the scientific establishment & his search for Extraterrestrial Life

    Today we are joined by Dr. Avi Loeb. Dr. Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University and a bestselling author (in lists of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, L'Express and more). He received a PhD in Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel at age 24 (1980-1986), led the first international project supported by the Strategic Defense Initiative (1983-1988), and was subsequently a long-term member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1988-1993). Loeb has written 8 books, including most recently, Extraterrestrial (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2021), and about 800 papers (with an h-index of 117) on a wide range of topics, including black holes, the first stars, the search for extraterrestrial life and the future of the Universe. Loeb is the Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (2007-present) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics , and also serves as the Head of the Galileo Project (2021-present). He had been the longest serving Chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy (2011-2020) and the Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative (2016-2021). He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics. Loeb is a former member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) at the White House, a former chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies (2018-2021) and a current member of the Advisory Board for "Einstein: Visualize the Impossible" of the Hebrew University. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative (2016-present) and serves as the Science Theory Director for all Initiatives of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. In 2012, TIME magazine selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space and in 2020 Loeb was selected among the 14 most inspiring Israelis of the last decade.
