In Episode 439 of the Survival Punk Podcast, we’re tackling one of the most chaotic and fast-moving threats you can face: riots. When tempers flare and crowds turn violent, things spiral fast. And the best prep isn’t a gas mask or body armor — it’s staying the hell out of the way.
Riots don’t come out of nowhere. There are always signs — rising tension, protests heating up, flashpoints in politics or society. Your job is to pay attention before the crowd forms. That means tuning into local news, monitoring police scanners, keeping an eye on social media (with a skeptical eye), and knowing what’s brewing in your area.
If you wait until you hear sirens or see smoke, you’re behind the curve.
Let’s be clear: you don’t win in a riot. There’s no prize for sticking around to see what happens. The smartest move is to stay away completely. If trouble’s brewing downtown, don’t go downtown. If a protest is set to pass by your work or home, find a way to be somewhere else.
That might mean calling out of work. And that’s fine. Your safety comes before a day’s pay or your boss’s approval. A job can be replaced. You can’t.
Plan alternate routes. Identify choke points where you could get trapped. Know how to slip out quietly if you ever do find yourself near trouble. And if you live or work in a high-risk area, think through what you’d do right now if the crowd turned violent.
Once a riot starts, everything changes in seconds. Streets clog, police lock down areas, and it’s easy to get swept up even if you’re just a bystander. Cars get blocked in. Shops close. Transit shuts down. And if you’re in the wrong place, it’s hard to get out.
This isn’t the time to play hero or film for social media. It’s the time to leave.
The best riot survival strategy is simple: don’t be there. Stay informed. Stay away. And if it means calling in, taking a different route, or hunkering down for a night — do it.
