A woman longing for a child receives a barley grain from a witch, from which Thumbelina, a tiny girl, emerges. Kidnapped by a toad for her son, she escapes with the help of fish. A beetle carries her off, but discards her for not being beetle-like. Spending a lonely summer and autumn in the forest, she seeks shelter with a field mouse. Forced to marry a mole, she befriends a swallow and nurses it back to health. In the spring, the swallow offers her a ride to a warm land, where she meets and marries a flower prince named Maja, finally finding happiness and freedom. The swallow then shares their story with a storyteller, ensuring it is known.
