"Where the Christmas-tree Grew" is a short story set on a snowy Christmas Eve in a New England school district, where mischievous Earl Munroe spins a tale for trusting eight-year-old Jenny Brown — that Christmas trees grow wild on the mountain, laden with presents. Jenny, poor, hungry, and utterly believing, sets off alone to find one. When she goes missing on the mountain, Earl must face the full weight of what his careless fib has done, and decides to make it right in a way that surprises everyone around him.
