Reynard the Fox is a medieval trickster tale in which the wily Reynard faces a royal court assembled by King Noble the Lion to answer for a string of thefts, murders, and deceits. When the King sends Bruin the Bear, then Tibert the Cat, and finally Grimbard the Badger to bring him in, Reynard turns each mission into a trap — leaving the bear stuck in a tree and the cat ensnared by a priest. Even at court, where conviction seems certain, Reynard spins lies about buried treasure and shifts blame onto an innocent ram, buying himself not just freedom but a title.
