This story follows Mr. Jimson, a diminutive man sensitive about his size, who gets a small gun to emulate larger men during hunting season. Despite his wife's gentle skepticism, he goes hunting and accidentally shoots a neighbor's pet duck, falling into the brook from the gun's recoil. After being mocked in the local newspaper, he tries again the next day, intending to shoot a drake, but mistakenly shoots the red, curly wig off the head of the duck's owner, Johnny Sprigg. Forced to pay for the duck and the wig and facing further public ridicule, the embarrassed Mr. Jimson gives up hunting, trades his gun for a lawnmower, and finds his expensive duck dinner rather unsatisfying.
