Theseus, raised in secret, proves his strength and travels to Athens, where his father, King Aegeus, recognizes him. Theseus volunteers to be one of the Athenian youths sacrificed to the Minotaur in Crete, a monstrous creature living in a labyrinth. There, he meets Ariadne, the king's daughter, who falls for him and helps him by providing a sword and a thread to navigate the labyrinth. Theseus slays the Minotaur and escapes, but he forgets to change the ship's sails from black to white. Aegeus, seeing the black sails, assumes Theseus is dead and throws himself into the sea, thus Theseus becomes king.
