Good now revolutionaries— RUMS 551 is Alex + Will hosting on the biggest cold-storage exploit of the year: the Cold Card wallet RNG vulnerability. Cold Card's random-number-generator check in firmware only verified that an RNG existed — not that it was actually working. When it didn't work, the device generated deterministic (crackable) seed phrases that a computer with enough compute could guess. The attack is ONGOING. It originally hit MK III, MK IV is now being attacked, and it's "only a matter of time before the entire line of Cold Cards gets attacked." Air-gapped hardware means nothing when the device firmware itself has this bug.

Arculus issued an official statement addressing the Cold Card vulnerability at 5:36. Alex's recommendation on-air (14:35 → 14:38): "Hardware wallet, just not Cold Card. And we recommend Arculus." This is the sharpest sponsor tie-in the show has recorded — Arculus explicitly positioned as the safer alternative during an active industry breach.

The bit.lovin (Timo) deep-dive at 53:14 → 82:00 is the technical meat. He explains the RNG check flaw, why the passphrase feature isn't enough entropy-wise to save affected users, and — critically — the solution: dice-roll entropy. Cold Card offers a feature where you generate your own randomness by rolling literal dice. 100+ dice rolls in a row create entropy "just not possible within the confines of physics and of our universe" to guess. bit.lovin buys casino-grade dice for his own setup. First-time guests: Timo (@bit.lovin on TikTok, former collegiate football coach at Stanford, now writing bitcoinandfootball.substack.com) and Satoshi Nakamoto (@Satoshi_Nakamoto TikTok creator, not the real one — "a picture of a guy on a computer"). Their backgrounds set the stage: Timo went from 2021 altcoin/meme-coin trading with no understanding, faded away, then got orange-pilled in 2023 and found white space for Bitcoin content on TikTok. Satoshi runs his own node + Lightning node + spends Bitcoin at Square merchants and Steak 'n Shake. "Verify, don't trust."

The BIP-110 deep dive is the meat. OP_RETURN is where Bitcoin transactions can attach arbitrary data. Bitcoin Core recently raised the default size from ~83 bytes. Most people run defaults (via Umbrel or start9), so oversized OP_RETURNs get rejected by their nodes as non-standard. BIP-110 wants to bring OP_RETURN back down to 83 bytes as a CONSENSUS rule (not just default). Author's main argument: prevent illegal-content uploads to the blockchain. Bitcoin Core's counter: even at 83 bytes people bypass with fake public keys — and OP_RETURN can be pruned, fake pubkeys can't. Timo and Satoshi both lean Knots + BIP-110, partly because "all the institutions and BlackRock are not with BIP-110 — that confirms my gut feeling is right."

Bit.lovin's cleanest insight of the hour is on ETFs + chain splits. If you hold an ETF and Bitcoin forks, the issuer decides which chain is "Bitcoin." You lose optionality. With self-custody, when the network splits you have double the Bitcoin and can wait out which chain wins — no decision forced on you. The single sharpest argument for self-custody the show has recorded this quarter.
