The Oscars made some history last night--even as it now seems that not many people were watching it happen.

"Parasite," the movie about class tensions from South Korea, became the first foreign language film to win the "best picture" Oscar.  Both award shows and American audiences have been historically reluctant about embracing films with subtitles, but could Parasite finally break that Hollywood glass ceiling?  

Four members of China's military were behind the massive hack of credit reporting agency Equifax back in 2017, that according to the Department of Justice.  So why is China's army interested in learning YOUR personal information?

While the state's DMV shouldered much of the blame for poor planning and execution for months of delays in getting the updated identification cards out to people, now it's Californians themselves who get some heat because they're simply taking their time........too much time.......in getting their Real ID's.  A deadline is looming, and so is disaster.

Since Secret Service agents have spent the bulk of their weekends guarding President Trump at a Trump resort property over the last three years.......and since the President is still in control of his own resorts.....you'd think he might cut taxpayers a break.  Quite the opposite:  Secret Service agents are being charged $650-a-night to stay at Mar a Lago.

It hit a balmy 65-degrees in the sleepy Trinity Peninsula, which ordinarily wouldn't really be news.  One small problem, however:  the Trinity Peninsula is in Antarctica, and 65-degree weather in Antarctica is unheard of--we'll go in depth.

As the Senate was voting to acquit President Trump, we asked what a post-impeachment president might look like........well today we got that answer, and then some.  President Trump, unrepentant and a varying times both gleeful and angry,  praised his allies and attacked his enemies at an hour-long impeachment victory lap at the White House today.

No, that wasn't an episode of VEEP you saw playing out in Iowa last night--that was, in reality, the Democrats stumbling badly out of the gate in their presidential nomination race.  We are almost 24 hours after the Iowa caucuses and we still don't have any results, and it looks like we won't get complete results any time soon.

So we'll go in depth, starting off in Iowa for the latest in what went wrong in reporting results from the caucuses.  And we'll take a closer look at why the use of smartphone apps is asking for trouble when it comes to tallying votes in elections.

President Trump is likely to be high spirits tonight when he delivers his third state of the union address.  He's likely about to be acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial, his job approval numbers are higher than ever and once again he's escaped possible punishment for his behavior--we'll preview the speech.

And Orange County's sheriff is blaming sanctuary cities and prison realignment for what he says is a spike in re-offending crimes by illegal immigrants who should've been deported.  We'll talk with the Sheriff about his concerns.

The first votes of the 2020 presidential campaign will be cast today in Iowa's famously quirky caucuses, and we should come out of tonight with a firm idea of who the front runner is in the Democratic nomination race.

Closer to home, Californians are able to cast their votes in the March 3rd primary starting today--but with record turnout expected and the state's already notoriously slow vote counting process, we might not know who won California's primary until well into April.

And we've talked about this before on In Depth, on how your gadgets are listening to you 24/7.  But we'll tell you an especially creepy story about one woman's iPad that was studiously eavesdropping on conversations in her home.

Almost all Americans who were living and working in the Wuhan province of China--the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak--have been evacuated from that area.  ALMOST all of them.......but there's one unlucky American who's been stuck, unable to find a way out.  We'll talk with an English teacher about life inside the coronavirus quarantine zone.

The coronavirus outbreak has been formally declared a  world-wide public health emergency by the World Health Organization.......and here in the U.S., the first person-to-person transmission of coronavirus has been confirmed.   We'll go In Depth.

Americans are living a little longer.  Deaths from cancer, heart disease and drug overdoses are down; life expectancy  has ticked up slightly. All good news, right?  Well, peel back the headlines and Americans are still in relatively lousy shape. 

And while you are under self-imposed quarantine, you can enjoy the new emojis that have just been released!  We'll look at how these goofy little cartoons have become major tools of communication.

It's looking increasingly likely that we're in the final 48 hours of impeachment proceedings against President Trump, with Republicans in the Senate showing no appetite to call witnesses and sounding like they'd like to vote to acquit the president as soon as tomorrow.

Closer to home, the  fire in a high rise apartment building on Wilshire yesterday has renewed the call to put more fire sprinkler systems in older high rise buildings.

We could very well be watching the final phase of the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump, as senators ask questions of House managers and the president's lawyers today.  But with the appetite for hearing from witnesses seeming to dwindle among Senate Republicans and with their eagerness to move on from impeachment, President Trump just might find himself acquitted by Friday

As a plane full of American diplomats evacuated from Wuhan, China landed in Southern California this morning, several international airlines were canceling all flights to and from mainland China in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Three more horses have died within the past week at Santa Anita racetrack, continuing a grim trend from 2019.  We had hoped to talk today with Santa Anita's track director but they backed out of a confirmed interview and so instead, we're going to look at the deadly issues at Santa Anita............and ask if horse racing is inherently cruel to the thoroughbreds doing the racing.
