We start with breaking news and a huge change to gun laws in California: the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just tossed out a law that limits the capacity of ammunition magazines.  California law set the limit at 10 bullets in a clip, but the court says that limit violates 2nd amendment rights.

The theory that Kamala Harris is ineligible to be the vice president, even though she was born in Oakland, was fueled this week by an opinion column by a Southern California law professor. The argument all comes down to a debate over birthright citizenship we'll talk with the legal scholar who touched off so much controversy.

A new economic survey shows that Los Angeles has seen the permanent closure of more businesses than any other U.S. city.......and the pain for business owners will likely get much worse before it gets better.

And Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health and Anthony Fauci's boss, joins us on In Depth for the second half of the show .... to set some realistic expectations for the arrival of an effective COVID vaccine.

The Gulf Arab states have never recognized Israel's right to exist, from the time the Jewish state came into being in 1949.  Even after Israel struck deals to normalize relations with Jordan and Egypt, the countries around the Persian Gulf wouldn't budge.  Well today that's changed in dramatic fashion -- Israel and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to establish diplomatic ties, and take some steps toward broader Middle East peace.

President Trump said the quiet part out loud today: he's denying requests to boost funding for the Postal Service to slow down the ability to count mail in ballots in November.

There is pretty strong evidence from an Apache tribal reservation in Arizona that contact tracing can save lives......we'll look at whether lessons learned there can be applied to the rest of us.

And....growing fears and warnings about the impending flu season, combined with COVID outbreaks.........but could we actually be set up to have a mild flu season?

As Joe Biden and Kamala Harris make their first appearance together as running mates, both Democrats and Republicans are scrambling to frame the newly announced ticket.  For Democrats, it's a groundbreaking, historic combination.  For Republicans, Kamala is a "California radical who completes the left-wing takeover of Biden." 

The rise of Harris in California, from San Francisco DA to state attorney general to U.S. Senator hasn't always been a smooth one, and she's rankled some liberals along the way......we'll hear about those criticisms.

And then, if Biden and Harris were to win, the political maneuvering in California is going to be intense--we'll preview what to expect.

Don't get too excited yet, but in some of the worst COVID hot spots over the last few months......the infection curve is once again flattening out, and hospitalizations are slowly starting to decrease.  Can we get it right this time?

And if you believe that being in peak physical shape makes you largely immune to the virus, think again:  several elite athletes who've been infected have been left with serious, long-lasting heart problems.

Could it be?? The breakthrough we've all been waiting for? An announcement of a safe and effective vaccination against COVID-19!

But...before you start popping the champagne bottles, consider this: the vaccine was developed in Russia, today's announcement was  made by Vladimir Putin with a lot of chest thumping pride and there is *plenty* of skepticism around the claim.

Have you tried to buy anything inside an actual store recently?  Whether it's shoes or athletic equipment or even furniture.... it's increasingly difficult to find a range of items ......and it can also be difficult just to find an open store.  We'll look at how the pandemic is changing the retail experience.

Yesterday, we brought you the news that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine had tested positive COVID-19  -- hours before he was supposed to meet with President Trump.  Today, we bring you the news that........Governor. DeWine is apparently negative.  And in this one example we get a pretty good idea about the state testing in this country.

 

The economy added 1.8 million jobs in July, which is a good thing; but the bad thing buried in the jobs report: more Americans are out of work for longer periods of time.

And we're also headed to New York, where school districts got the green light to reopen for in-person learning.  But will schools actually open back up? Will parents send their kids?

Would you volunteer to have yourself infected with COVID-19, after taking one of the experimental vaccines being developed?  It's called a "challenge trial," and it's the ultimate high risk, high reward way to develop and test potential vaccinations.

And maybe you're not a huge YouTube fan. Or follow a bunch of popular names on Instagram or Tik Tok. But your kids probably do. And they've been watching these influencers partying for the last month ....pandemic be damned.

The lawsuit filed today by New York State's Attorney General against the National Rifle Association actually has nothing to do with guns or the 2nd amendment.  No, this is an old fashioned corruption case with the NRA's leadership accused of self-dealing and mismanagement of its members funds.  But the case will still be a political football headed into the presidential election.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was among the first in the country to take the coronavirus outbreak seriously; so it's with great irony that Gov. DeWine tested positive for COVID-19 today, right before he was supposed to meet with President Trump--we head to Ohio for a closer look.

New research shows that people infected with COVID who are asymptomatic are carrying the same amount of virus in their nose, throat and lungs as those people who are really sick with the virus......so what does that mean for the rest of us who are unknowingly around asymptomatic people?

California's prisons are set to release A LOT of inmates because of rapidly spreading COVID cases, and many of those inmates have very violent backgrounds....

And schools reopened for students this week in Mississippi and Georgia, and within days infections started spreading and hundreds were forced to quarantine.....we'll head down south to look at how their school reopenings have been going.

There have been theories about people getting re-infected with COVID-19 for the last few months, and more than a few suspected cases of that happening around the world. Now, there are reports of two people here in the US, testing positive three months after their first infections.

Running for president in the middle of a pandemic is tough.  Shortly after President Trump indicated he'll accept the Republican nomination for president at the White House, Joe Biden says he won't be going to Milwaukee to participate in the Democratic convention.........we'll look at the difficulties of campaigning in the coronavirus era.

LA County makes moves to give some teeth to its coronavirus ordinances, but is anyone really going to jail over not wearing a mask?

And Ellen DeGeneres, who made a career out of being nice and preaching kindness, now has her landmark talk show in jeopardy over reports that she wasn't so nice to a lot of her staff.

There is a dire economic warning out today: parents who cannot work from home might be forced to give up their jobs........by the MILLIONS.......in order to care for their kids, who are stuck at home with remote-learning. It's a potential disaster in the making.

Did you watch the interview of President Trump on HBO last night? With Jonathan Swan from Axios? The President insisted coronavirus was "under control" ...critics say he appeared to just not grasp the severity of the pandemic. Swan is also being praised for his fact-checking. Isn't that what you're supposed to do?? Why does the press usually have such a hard time?

And......what if the *next pandemic* is far deadlier?  Have we shown ourselves at all capable of containing an outbreak?

College students are getting ready to head back to some of their campuses early: to quarantine. We'll talk with an incoming freshman about her unusual introduction to college life.

And a group of Pac-12 football players have organized a campaign that demands safety steps... and they're threatening to sit it out the season. We'll talk with a player leading the charge.

20-something's in this country, who have been blamed as the main source for the resurgence of coronavirus, are increasingly fed up.  Their social lives were shut down, their careers were put on pause.........and they're often criticized for acting like they're invincible. 

Would this make you jump on the next flight out of town?  Emirates Airlines is promising to *cover your funeral costs* if you happen to catch COVID on one of their planes.......and die.  We'll look at how brands are trying to advertise during a pandemic.

And with the rush to develop a vaccine...will political pressure come into play? President Trump continues to promise that one will be here soon. Will scientists cut some corners?

A federal reserve board governor offered the prescription to a depressed economy:  shut down the entire country, without exceptions, for at least six weeks...and  snuff out the coronavirus as much as possible.  Would that work..........would you do it? And really stick to it?

And with the boosted unemployment benefits are now finished, we'll talk with some people who lost their jobs...lost the extra money....and are trying to stay afloat.
