Your hearing is fine. Your spouse just mumbles. The restaurant is too loud. And everybody needs to quit talking from the other room.
Sound familiar?
Dr. Arica Black of The Hearing Doctor joins Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte for a funny, honest conversation about hearing loss—and the excuses we make before getting it checked.
Brent shares how missing conversations affected his client meetings, why he finally embraced hearing aids, and why he won’t shut up about custom earplugs. Dr. Black discusses what families notice first, how hearing difficulties can be mistaken for personality traits, and what getting evaluated actually involves.
Jeff shares his dad’s experience with hearing care—and decides it’s time to stop talking about being proactive and book his own appointment.
We also discuss:
If your family has been encouraging you to get checked, this episode might sound familiar. If you’re the family member doing the encouraging, send it with love—not during an argument.

Can you disagree about politics and still be friends? Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte think a friendship deserves more than being reduced to a vote.
In this episode of Risk Raiders, Jeff shares a story about a close friend of nearly 30 years whose political views often differed from his own—and why their friendship mattered more. Jeff and Brent also tackle heated Facebook posts, voting without carrying the argument everywhere, and finding common ground beyond politics.
There’s a little “cussing and discussing,” a suggestion to take your next rant into the backyard, and one simple reminder: keep your friends. They’re hard to get.
No candidate endorsements. No party scorekeeping. Just a candid conversation about political differences, friendship, and turning down the temperature.
What helps you stay friends with someone whose politics differ from yours? Share what works—not who you voted for.
Subscribe to Risk Raiders for candid conversations, real-life risks, and a little humor along the way.

A runaway pumpkin. An escaped iguana. A squirrel with absolutely no respect for personal space. And a hundred-pound lifting test at the center of a $200,000 settlement.
Just another day at Risk Raiders.
Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte break down bizarre public reports, questionable decisions, and the everyday risks hiding behind the punch lines. From Halloween decorations going mobile to Jeff’s very personal squirrel encounter, this episode takes the scenic route to some real-world lessons.
On the business side, the guys discuss a Fort Worth dealership fire, planning for that middle-of-the-night phone call, choosing who talks to the media, and why Brent likes cameras at home and at the office.
Then: an employment discrimination settlement raises a question—does that job requirement actually match the job?
Plus, a little Texas Tech football and a friendly reminder: tie down your pumpkin.

One week. Four Texas cities. Falling buildings, flying trailers and a $500K oops.
Falling buildings: A woman takes a sick friend to the ER, hears a rumble, and walks out to find part of the building on her car. Then she can't get anyone to call her back.
Flying trailers: A truck hauling an excavator picks a fight with a Lubbock bridge and loses. Jeff and Brent get into what happens when your load is too tall, why a disconnected trailer becomes a highway missile, and why one Hangover giraffe flashback was unavoidable.
The $500K oops: A company tells a woman applying for a warehouse job "we only hire men," and the EEOC settlement that follows costs half a million dollars.
Along the way: who should pay when someone else's property wrecks your car, why you call your agent before the 800 number, and why every growing business needs Employment Practices Liability coverage before one bad comment gets expensive.
Got a crazy claim story from your week? Drop it in the comments, but leave out names. It's about the risk, not the people.

Texas drivers may be paying for Flock cameras through charges on their auto insurance policies—and most of us probably never gave that fee a second thought.
In this episode of Risk Raiders, Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte quit flocking around long enough to talk about Flock Safety cameras, Texas auto-policy fees, public safety, privacy, data sharing, and where the line ought to be drawn.
Nobody is arguing against catching violent criminals, stopping human trafficking, or helping law enforcement find dangerous people. But when cameras can identify license plates, vehicle details, travel patterns, and potentially connect data across agencies, it is fair for Texans to ask a few questions:
We also get into the growing concern around AI, altered images, false identification, and the need for real safeguards before technology gets too far ahead of common sense.
This is not an anti-law-enforcement conversation. It is a pro-common-sense, pro-transparency, and pro-“maybe we should know what the flock we are paying for” conversation.
Leave a civil comment and tell us where you draw the line.

Texas Tech is 4-0, and Jeff and Brent see plenty to celebrate and plenty of room to grow. The Red Raiders take care of Sam Houston, but the slow start and turnovers made this one feel a lot less comfortable than the scoreboard suggested.
On this Risk Raiders Big Game Review, we’re talking defensive fireworks, why Cameron Dickey needs the football, and what it’ll take for the Red Raiders to put together four complete quarters. Plus: two pick-sixes that would have Jeff retiring on the spot, a golf ball that nearly interrupts his entire season, and a Colorado preview with a suspicious aroma.
Two fans. Strong opinions. Absolutely no coaching offers pending.

Every family has a conversation it would rather avoid.
It may be about money, parenting, a job loss, aging parents, stress, co-parenting, or a relationship that feels strained. But as Judge Sonya Heath shares in this episode of Risk Raiders, avoiding the conversation does not make the issue disappear. Often, it makes the problem harder to solve later.
Judge Heath of Harris County’s 310th Family District Court joins Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte for a candid conversation about communication, children, co-parenting, family stress, and the practical choices that can help families build stronger habits before a manageable issue grows into something much harder.
This is not a conversation about blame. It is not a discussion of anyone’s individual case. It is a reminder that healthier families often begin with honest communication, respect, and a willingness to get help when a difficult conversation cannot be handled alone.
In this episode:
• Why family court handles much more than divorce
• The hard conversations families often avoid
• Why addressing problems early can make a difference
• How parents can keep children out of adult conflict
• Why children should never be used as messengers
• How criticism of one parent can affect a child
• Why a difficult spouse is not automatically a bad parent
• The emotional and financial cost of unresolved conflict
• When counseling, mediation, trusted support, or other help may be useful
• One family risk-management step listeners can take this week
Judge Heath’s central message: Have the conversations you have been avoiding.
Guest: Judge Sonya Heath, Harris County 310th Family District Court
Hosts: Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte
Show: Risk Raiders
This episode is for general education and conversation only. It is not legal advice. Every family situation is different. If you have a specific legal question, an active court matter, an immediate safety concern, or a concern involving abuse or violence, seek qualified local help.

Every business owner thinks they know what's wrong with their business. Most of them are wrong.
That's the message Carey Wallace and Lindsay Sexton — the mother-daughter team behind Agency Focus — deliver over and over again to owners who invite them in to "look at one thing" and end up staring at five bigger things they never saw coming.
This week, they sit down with two insurance gurus (that'd be us) to share what they actually see inside hundreds of family businesses: perpetuation, valuation, the messy family stuff nobody wants to talk about, and what happens when AI starts telling everyone exactly what they want to hear.
Also covered:
• The consultant who told Jeff he had a 5% chance of surviving as a third-generation owner (jury's still out)
• Why "buy low, sell high" falls apart when it's YOUR business
• The Texas dad who wished he'd been kinder to his own father
• The $50 million real estate deal ChatGPT killed
• Why you probably shouldn't write your own will
• The one number about to matter more than EBITDA
• Advisors, not processors — the AI shift every agency is missing
Whether you run an insurance agency, a family business, or any company with employees and something worth protecting — grab a coffee. This one gets real.

New- Welcome to a little Risk Raider fun as we chat about the latest Texas Tech game, we call it our "Big Game Review."
No. 13 Texas Tech survived No. 22 Houston 28-26 Friday night at Galaxy Stadium, and Jeff and Brent are still catching their breath. In this first Big Game Review, the Risk Raiders recap the "photo finish of failure" — that final-minute 2-point conversion where Conner Weigman came up just inches short — plus the pork-shoulder tailgate that stole the pregame, the C-5 Galaxy flyover that shook Lubbock, and why the crowd stayed on their feet all four quarters.
Wins get remembered. This one gets replayed.
Big Game Review is the Risk Raiders sub-show for Texas Tech fans — posted right after every game. Subscribe so you don't miss the next one.
Shoutouts to Nikki, Joan, Kathy, and to Lauren & Cory for stopping by the tailgate. Guns Up.

Jeff and Brent raid the risks of AI in customer service — where it belongs (backstage), where it burns you (out front), and the "deductible of time" every customer is quietly running on you.
Featuring an airline chatbot lawsuit, the auto dealer that sold a Tahoe for a dollar, why Jeff refuses to turn on voicemail, and some data shows agencies with the heaviest front-end AI adoption are actually growing slower.
If your agent sleeps ten hours a night, you need to call somebody else.
