"তিরিশের কবিদের খানিকটা আগেই নজরুলেও আমরা রবীন্দ্রবিরোধিতার আরেকটি মাত্রা লক্ষ করি। তবে তিরিশের দশকের মোহগ্রস্ত রবীন্দ্রবিরোধিতার সঙ্গে নজরুলের রবীন্দ্রবিরোধিতার যথেষ্ট পার্থক্য রয়েছে। বর্তমান সময়ে নজরুলকে আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা ও জীবনবোধের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত করার স্বার্থেই এই পার্থক্যটাকে বিশেষভাবে খেয়াল করা প্রয়োজন। না, রবীন্দ্রনাথকে জোরেশোরে বর্জন করবেন বলেই নজরুল বোদলেয়ার বা এলিয়টকে পীর মানেননি। কোনো ভিনদেশি নন্দনতত্ত্বের প্রচারকও সাজেননি তিনি। একেবারে ইতিহাসের ভেতরে থেকেই নিজের ইতিহাসের তাপে ও চাপে, বা সেই ইতিহাসের অনিবার্য ছন্দঃস্পন্দে, এক অনায়াস স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যে, নজরুল কবিতার ভাষায় এবং গানের ভাষায় তৈরি করেছিলেন এমন এক কণ্ঠস্বর যাকে চট করে চেনা যায়, যাকে অনায়াসেই আলাদা করা যায় রবীন্দ্রনাথের কণ্ঠস্বর থেকে। সেখানেই শেষ নয়। নজরুলের এই অনায়াস রবীন্দ্রবিরোধিতা তিরিশের আধুনিকতাবাদী রবীন্দ্রবিরোধিতাকেও বিরোধিতা করে বটে। এখানে বলা দরকার, রবীন্দ্রনাথেও খানিকটা উপনিবেশবাদবিরোধিতা ছিল বটে, কিন্তু সে বিরোধিতা তার ওপর পশ্চিমা উদারনৈতিকতার প্রভাবে মাঝে মধ্যে পিছু হটেছে; এক ধরনের ঔপনিবেশিক অচেতনও সেখানে কাজ করেছে বটে। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যে নজরুলই বোধকরি সবচেয়ে লড়াকু উপনিবেশবাদবিরোধী লেখক যাকে সামান্যতম ঔপনিবেশিক হীনমন্যতা স্পর্শ করেনি, যার স্বার্থতাড়িত ঔপনিবেশিক টানাপোড়েনের কোনো প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায় না।" - ড. আজফার হোসেন
ঋতুরাজ বসন্তের মতোই ‘মে’ শব্দটিও বহন করে দ্ব্যর্থতা। একদিকে তা উদযাপনের, অন্যদিকে প্রতিরোধের। পশ্চিমা ক্যালেন্ডারে মে মাসের উৎপত্তি হয়তো খোঁজা যেতে পারে রোমান দেবী মাইয়ার নাম থেকে—যিনি প্রকৃতির উর্বরতাকে প্রতীক করে উদ্যাপনের মধ্য দিয়ে দেবতুল্য হয়ে উঠেছিলেন। কিন্তু আমাদের ইতিহাসে মে একটি দিবস নয়, এক দীর্ঘশ্বাস, এক স্লোগান: “We want to feel the sunshine, we want eight hours.”
এই মে দিবস, আজকের দুনিয়ায় যে 'লেবার ডে' নামক ছুটির দিনে পরিণত হয়েছে, তার শিকড় খোঁজার জন্য যেতে হয় ১৮৮৬ সালের শিকাগো শহরে। যেখানে হাজার হাজার শ্রমিক তাঁদের দৈনিক আট ঘণ্টা শ্রমের দাবিতে রাস্তায় নেমেছিলেন। যেখান থেকে শুরু হয়েছিল এক গণহত্যা—‘হে মার্কেট ম্যাসাকার’—যেখানে শ্রমিকদের দোষ ছিল তারা স্বপ্ন দেখেছিল ন্যায্যতার।
এই ‘মে’ শুধুই একটি পঞ্জিকা তারিখ নয়, এটি এক জাগরণের নাম—এক রাজনীতির নাম। যাকে গ্লোবাল নর্থ শীতলভাবে মুছে দিয়েছে এক ‘লেবার ডে’-র ছদ্মবেশে। অথচ যে দেশগুলোর হাতে পৃথিবীর রাজনৈতিক মানচিত্র আঁকা, তারাই সবচেয়ে নিষ্ঠুরভাবে মে দিবসকে নির্বিষ করেছে। কারণ মে-র ইতিহাস বলতে সাহস লাগে, মে-র ইতিহাস মানে রক্ত, ফাঁসি, ট্রেড ইউনিয়ন, এবং সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, রাষ্ট্র-বিরোধী এক মানবিক ভাষা।
আজকের দুনিয়ায়, যেখানে ‘শ্রমিক’ শব্দটাই কনফারেন্স-ভিত্তিক উন্নয়নশীল নীতি-পত্রে গুলিয়ে ফেলা হয়েছে ‘কর্মী’ বা ‘হিউম্যান রিসোর্স’-এর ভেতর, সেখানে মে দিবসের ঐতিহাসিক ভূমিকাকে মনে করাটা একপ্রকার রাজনৈতিক কর্তব্য। যখন শাসকরা শ্রেণীর কথা এড়িয়ে যায়, তখন ‘মে’ সেই শ্রেণীচেতনার শিরা-উপশিরায় আলো ফেলে।
শ্রমিক আজও উৎপাদন করে, অথচ মালিকানা তার নয়। মজুরি সে পায়, অথচ সম্পদের নিয়ন্ত্রণ থাকে অন্য হাতে। ‘মে’ তারই বিরুদ্ধে মুখ খুলে বলা এক দিন—যেখানে একজন পারসনস আদালতে দাঁড়িয়ে বলে যেতে পারেন: “ফাঁসিতে চড়িয়ে যদি আন্দোলন থামানো যায়, তাহলে ফাঁসি দিন।”
শ্রমজীবী মানুষের ইতিহাস কখনও ছুটির ইতিহাস নয়—তা সংগ্রামের। ‘মে’ তার সবচেয়ে অন্তরালে থাকা পর্ব। এবং এই মে-র কথা বলা মানে শুধু অতীত নয়—এটি ভবিষ্যতের পথরেখা টানা। আজ যখন শ্রমিক মানে গিগ-ওয়ার্কার, যখন ফ্লেক্সিবিলিটি মানে ওভারটাইম-ছাড়া জীবন, তখন এই মে দিবস আবারও প্রশ্ন তোলে: মানুষের শ্রম কি কেবল সংখ্যার ভাষায় লেখা হবে?
এখন সময়, মে-র মর্মার্থ নতুনভাবে অনুধাবন করার। কারণ এই দিনটির ইতিহাস বলে, শ্রেণীকে এড়িয়ে শান্তি আসে না। শ্রেণী-সংঘাত না হলে সাম্য আসে না। এবং মে দিবস সেই শ্রেণীসংঘাতের গর্ভ থেকে জন্ম নেওয়া এক বিশ্বব্যাপী উচ্চারণ: দুনিয়ার মজদুর এক হও।
