I had a conversation recently that completely changed the way I think about relationships.
We were talking about the idea that the people who trigger us are often simply mirrors - revealing patterns, wounds and lessons that already existed within us. That if we hadn't met that person, life would simply have found another way to teach us the same thing.
And I understand that perspective.
But I don't believe it.
Because what if the person and the lesson aren't so easily separated? What if the meaning doesn't simply exist waiting to be discovered, but is actually created through the relationship itself?
The timing. The chemistry. The love. The conflict. The things you bring out in one another. The version of yourself that only seems to exist in the presence of that particular person.
One perspective says: they were your mirror.
The other says: you created alchemy together.
And perhaps the most interesting possibility is that both can be true.
In this episode, I explore that tension through the ideas of Carl Jung, Esther Perel, Harville Hendrix, Viktor Frankl, Alfred Adler and Rainer Maria Rilke - and through a very real conversation with someone who sees relationships almost completely differently from me.
Because perhaps the question isn't whether someone was the one or simply a lesson.
Perhaps it's this:
Can someone be both the mirror that shows you yourself and the alchemy that changes you?
