We’re going to study the first three hours of Jesus’ crucifixion. We’re also going to meet two people who get saved by this Gospel that we talk about so much. We could say that one man had a divine disruption to his life. The other man had a God Intersection. One that he was not looking forward to—but changed the last moments of his life and certainly his eternal life. Who are these two men, and why do you care?

As I mentioned last Sunday, we are in the most gruesome part of what’s called the Passion narrative. It’s also important to know here that there is a purpose in all of Jesus’s suffering. Jesus went through all this pain and shame as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world so that you could have a real relationship with Him.

We left our story from last Sunday when Pilate found out that Jesus is a Galilean. So Pilate sends Jesus to King Herod because Galilee is Herod’s jurisdiction. Herod also finds Jesus innocent and sends Him back to Pilate. Now Pilate has an even bigger problem on his hands. From a political perspective, Pilate’s been formally warned by Rome about his administrative style. Needless to say, another uprising from the Jews would not look good on Pilate’s record. Then all of a sudden, Pilate had an idea that would get him out of this mess. What was the idea? Today we meet another new character—and if you thought Pilate was shady…well, you're in for a real treat today! Because we’re going to meet a man named Barabbas. Who is this man? And why do you care?

Today we meet a new person in the narrative of Jesus’ passion. That person is Pontius Pilat. As we dive into this narrative this morning, it’s important to note that the other three Gospels give much more details than Mark. So we’re going to harmonize the Gospels so we can see a more vivid picture of today’s narrative. But we’re really going to focus on this man named Pontius Pilate. Who is this man? And why is he so important in the life of Jesus Christ?

Today, we come to one of the most infamous Scripture passages in all of the New Testament--Peter's denial of Jesus.  As we know, Peter talked too much, listened very little, refused to pray, acted too fast, and followed Jesus at a distance. In other words, Peter has a bad case of the normals. Peter represents all of us at one time or another in our own lives. And today’s Scripture passage is disturbing because of where that leads. There is nothing more shocking than the betrayal of a good friend. However, today’s text is also a source of great encouragement. How can it be both? Let’s find out!

Today's text is Gethsemane’s sequel. 
Today’s Scripture passage reveals the incredible accuracy of Jesus’ predictions of betrayal, suffering, dying, and rising three days later. 

Now, before we read the text, I have to mention that we’re familiar with the terms “innocent until proven guilty.” 
The Jews had a similar legal system. 
They had many laws in place where someone had to be overwhelmingly proven guilty before they were punished. 
Well, except for Jesus. All bets are off for the holy one of God. I want you to be aware of some of the blatant laws that were broken. 
In fact, the Jews broke 22 of their own laws in the arrest and trial the three separate trials of Jesus. All that to say this, nearly every detail of Jesus’ and arrest and trial violates the rules prescribed in Jewish law. 
Why? Why was the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus of Nazareth so blatantly manipulated?

Today, we come to a section of Scripture that is impossible for me to properly introduce what the Lord will teach us today. The English language....the human language, rather, doesn't have the vocabulary of the suffering and glory that we will see in the Garden of Gethsemane. 
Today’s narrative takes place during the middle of the night, as Thursday night becomes early Friday morning. 
The time frame is most likely between 12am-2am.
