On Easter Sunday we celebrate baptisms by looking at the Baptism story of the Ethiopian in Chapter 8 of Acts.

In the story of the first martyr, Stephen, we see an incredible example of what it means to be a disciple of Christ, one who is willing to pick up our cross and follow Christ (something Luke, the writer of Acts mentions twice in his gospel - Luke 9:23 and Luke 14:27). What might it look like for you to deny yourself and follow Christ? What sacrifices are you making to follow him? Are we to comfortable?

Whenever the kingdom of God advanced the enemy fights back, often through persecution. Here the disciples are brought before a court that could put them to death, and yet they continue to proclaim the gospel/. In response they are flogged. And yet, they leave thanking God that they get to share in Christ's suffering and encouraged to preach even more! This is one of the most challenging stories in Scripture, but also a reminder of God's passion for the purity of His church. At this infant stage God will allow nothing to threaten his church, and so he protects her. We must have a similar passion for purity, wanting to rid ourselves of anything that might threaten the beauty of Christ's bride.

After the resurrection Jesus gives his disciples a purpose, a power and a promise - to preach the good news of the gospel all over the world, by the power of his Spirit, until he returns. Nothing has changed for us.
