Faith is not just a New Testament idea. The God of the Bible did not start out with a bunch of rules and then change to faith midway through. Faith has always been the way people please God. In the end, the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love and love sums up the rules of God. Hebrews 11 shows us that the Old Testament is chalk full of examples of men and women who demonstrated faith in God. They put their hope in a promise, who we now know is Jesus, that together with us they might be perfected. But these Heroes of Faith are not simply bed time stories meant to teach us a moral lesson. Instead, they are a cheering crowd telling us to throw off sin and chase after Jesus with everything we've got. Jesus is indeed the Hero of Heroes who achieves salvation for us, writes faith onto our hearts, and perfects our faith in Him.
