1 Samuel Ch. 9
v. 1-2
The name “Saul” means, “asked of God.”
v. 3-14
“The word seer, roeh, occurs for the first time in this place; it literally signifies a person who sees; particularly preternatural[supernatural] sights. A seer and a prophet were the same in most cases; only with this difference, the seer was always a prophet, but the prophet was not always a seer.” (Clarke)
1.The three roles of a prophet are to teach, warn, and call people to repentance.
Teach
Prophets teach the word of God and the laws of God
They interpret the word of God
They counsel and encourage people
Warn
Prophets warn people of the consequences of rejecting God
They may see into the future and foretell coming events
Repentance
Prophets call people to turn back to God
They call the unrighteous to repentance
Prophets are also known as spokespeople for God. They receive revelations and directions from God, and then share them with the people.
2.A seer is a prophet who sees visions. They see what God is doing and revealing, rather than just hearing his words.
