Great novel with a wide cast of characters...
Riverboat by Author Douglas Hirt
Riverboat is the first book that I have read and reviewed by Author Douglas Hirt and I found it very enjoyable indeed. He has a wide cast of characters that are both mysterious and intriguing, some more likable than others.
Captain Hamilton is the owner of The Tempest Queen and takes great pride in his steam boat and the many times it has crossed the Mississippi River. However, he has a gambling addiction which gets him in more trouble than he can manage on his own. He crosses paths with Dexter McKay who in his element among gamblers. He quickly comes to the rescue of the Captain. In doing so, he succeeds in getting a free passage to Baton Rouge on the Tempest Queen.
There are a variety of both good and bad people found aboard the riverboat that add much spice to the story line. Clifton Stewart is a young, rich, plantation man who is smitten with Mystie Waters who is employed by Captain Hamilton. Mystie has a deep dark secret that she goes to great lengths to hide. When Statler boards the boat with a black slave in tow, Mystie Waters has her work cut out for her.
It was so easy to get caught up in everyone's woes and to become sensitive to the challenges they faced as the story unfolded. And then, there is the mysterious Genevieve de Winters...I am sure we will learn more about her in Book 2Riverboat: Assassinationof this trilogy.
Great fictional novel with a little history thrown in for added pleasure!

Good read
I liked the book. It has a good plot and I thought the characters were fun. I would have rated it a 4 if the spelling errors hadn't bogged me down so many times. Still, I would, and have already, recommend it to others.
Slow
This book starts out very slow, it was difficult to stay with it, momentum grew about half way when finding the motives, then the interest arises that one must finish. The last chapter brings everything together. JPO
Really enjoyed it
I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice change from the typical western and I can't wait to get to the next in the series.
Four Stars
Enjoyed all of Hirt's riverboat books (3 I'm aware of). Wish there were more.
