I found the road to wealth when I decided that a part of all I earned was mine to keep. The Richest Man in Babylon

It’s easy to identify all the things you’re doing wrong with your money…

But how do you do it right? What are the rules of the game? What do you need to do differently to become financially successful?

In this episode, we pay homage to George Clason’s classic personal finance book, written way back in 1926, called The Richest Man in Babylon.

Clason tells the story of how Arkad, a working class man who made a living carving inscriptions on clay tablets, became the richest man in Babylon by following seven simple rules.

          1. Pay Yourself First
          2. Spend Less Than You Earn
          3. Always Be Invested
          4. Protect Your Wealth From Loss
          5. Automate Your Saving & Investing
          6. Don’t Pay Too Much for Housing
          7. Make More Money
          8. We’ve repurposed the rules a little bit to make them easier to understand. But believe it or not, these seven rules are just as relevant today as they were back in 1926.

              I’m sorry… but you’ve been lied to.

Unless you’re a finance or economics major, no one ever sat you down to teach you the mechanics of money. As a result, you probably have some deep-seated beliefs about money that are not only wrong — but also destructive to your financial future.

              Things like…

              • Being debt free is the ultimate goal.
              • I like cash because it's safe.
              • I don't have enough to invest right now.
              • I can worry about retirement later.
              • My house is the only investment I need.
              • Do you know why these lies are destructive?

Listen to this week’s episode to find out…

                • Why Discipline Is Not Enough to Change Your Financial Habits

Why do you have such a hard time achieving your goals?

Is it because you’re not disciplined enough? Perhaps you don’t have enough willpower? Maybe you’re just not driven enough?

The truth is a bit less dramatic than that. It turns out willpower and discipline are like muscles if you use them over and over again without rest, they get tired.

A study conducted by Columbia University found that judges were more likely to grant parole to inmates whose parole hearings were scheduled first thing in the morning or after lunch than any other time of day.

Decision fatigue applies to financial decisions as well. Another study found that people with lower incomes performed worse on cognitive function tests when asked to ponder an expensive car repair than when asked to ponder a cheaper repair.

Bottom line: you’re terrible at making decisions.

If you want any chance of achieving your financial goals, you need to find a way to take yourself out of the equation and make good decisions automatic.

                  In this episode, we discuss:

                  • Why most people will never achieve their goals no matter how hard they try

In Episode 2, we talked about why intention is the key to financial success.

But good intentions won’t simply make all your problems go away. To bring those intentions to life, you need to turn them into actionable goals that will drive your behaviour.

                      In this episode, we discuss:

                      • Why good intentions won’t magically make your money problems disappear.
                      • How to achieve everything you want in life by putting the “big rocks” first.

Case Study: Meet Abid & Amina

Their intentions for seeking wealth are:

                        1. Support parents in old age
                        2. Provide best education & opportunities for children
                        3. Perform Hajj
                        4. Find a way to retire early and travel
                        5. Their SMART goals are (written from Abid’s perspective):

                          1. In 5 years my parents will retire. They will have enough money to live without help for an additional 5 years. By then they will be 70 and will need some financial help as retirement planning wasn't on their mind when they were younger. They will need about $1000 a month to help with bills. Eventually they want to come live with us and sell their fully paid off house. My wife's parents have enough to take care of themselves and will move in with my wife's older sister's family eventually.
                          2. I want my kids to complete undergraduate studies and not have to go into any debt at all. The total cost in today's dollars will be $75,000 each. This will happen 17 and 18 years from now. Also I want my kids to attend night school for Arabic and Quran, that will cost $150/month starting at age 3. I want to make sure I have money for extracurricular activities in high school for them as well. I want to build a fund of $10,000 each by the time they reach 13.
                          3. In 5 years I want to go to Hajj with my spouse. It will cost us $15,000 each by then.
                          4. Normal retirement age would be 65, but I want to be able to travel with my wife when I am 55 and work part time. I want to plan to work until I am 60, and be able to live a work optional lifestyle by that time. I know that average life expectancy is going up so I should be prepared to have income to last my wife and I until we are at least 90. I will not draw from my investments until the age of 60 at which point I want us to have 80% of the after-tax income we currently have.

                          6. 002 – Why Intention is the Key to Financial Success

Do you know what you need to do — but have a hard time doing it?

You’re not alone. It’s human nature to choose immediate gratification over longer term rewards. Whether it’s eating out, buying clothes, going on vacation, or whatever — we’re all guilty of spending money on things we don’t need at the expense of our future goals.

How can you bring your actions in line with your goals? It all begins with your intention.

As the Prophet Muhammad said: “Verily, actions are judged by intentions.” If you don’t have a clear intention for why you’re earning money and seeking wealth, it’s no wonder you’re not making progress.

In this 24 minute episode, we discuss:

                            • The real reason you’re sacrificing your long term goals for short term gratification.
                            • How identifying your intentions can have the biggest impact on your money and your life.
                            • A little known hadith that draws a clear line between good and bad intentions for seeking wealth.
                            • The critical questions you need to ask yourself to write your own story about money.
                            • What happens when people skip this step and jump to the ‘mechanics’ of personal finance.
